Mp3, WMA or Ogg Vorbis? Wich is best?

I wanna use my axim to play music but in wich of the three formats: Mp3, WMA or Ogg vorbis would i get the smallest filesize without lossing any quality?

Could someone tell me and also tell me wich progralm they use to convert their music files to the best format?

If possible a small guid would be helfull because i don't know what will be the ebst bitrate, if i need to encode 1st or 2nd pass and stuff.

Thanx

Well, there's a huge debate about that. I prefer WMA, if only because I used Windows Media Player to convert all of my CDs to WMA files. Also, they seem to be slightly smaller than equivalent bitrate MP3's.

I cannot answer from personal experience, but there is a lot of information at the PCWorld web site. One article I found quickly is at: http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,18030,00.asp

Hope this helps! :)

Hi, I would recommend ogg or wma for the smallest file size without losing quality. For converting files, I use dBpowerAMP MusicConverter because its fast and free. If you have pocket pc 2003 then you can download the wma 9 codec for dBpower AMP and get even smaller file sizes. So If you do have ppc 2003 then use wma 9 with windows media player or if you have ppc 2002 then use Ogg or wma 8. Also if you look in the help file of dBpower AMP there is a good guide to help you convert your files. As for the bit rate to encode the files, I would use 128Kbps or 192Kbps if you have good ears.

well when using ogg vorbis files i beleive they contain compression, or something like that but they DO require MORE processor power to play, so i wouldnt depend on underclocking your axim to 100mhz to save power, ide test one out on your highest bitrate of music such as 190, i do think 190 is overdoing it i beleive a normal cd is 128, unless you are refering to variable?

i would honestly recomend mp3 due to its popularity, if you dont want to buy a mp3 ripper then there is a free one, is has adds but you can pay to get rid of em, it has advanced features such as variable bitrate which can save space.

For example... if there is silence in your music track then it will lower the current bitrate to 32kbps compared to the normal 128 or 96kbps.

Heres a link

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...d,16726,00.asp

I beleive it also convert vorbis files, and controls bitrates to.

hope i have been some help

oh and ajw very helpfull first post and welcome to the forum!, i hope all your future axim problems just fade away

oh, and also if some of your cds are scratched, your going to have to set it to reread the sectors or whatever they call em to like 15 or 20 times if you want a decend rip. and be sure to clean your cds for the best quality it is very picky and so is wmp's wmv ripper. I find the best way to clean them is to set them in a sink with dishsoap and wipe them with a dishtowel and obviously not to use a scrubpad on em.

dBpowerAMP also comes with a ripper that can convert to WMA with a downloadable codec...and the dB can even rip the state of the art copyrighted CD's as well...
