Things you might need to know about encoding divx for the axim...
All right, first, this is not about how to encode. This about some settings an what I found out about them i use.
1. When encoding, make sure you use 15 or 12 frames per second if at all possible. With the newest version of Vurtualdub, you can set the exact number of frames per second. Higher frame rates may still be playable, but you might begin seeing "screen artifacts". This garbage seems to be due to the pocket pc skipping PART of the frame in order to keep up. If the artifact keeps appearing in your final copy, then switch from 12 to 15, or from 15 to 12. Usually it will help.
2. A bitrate of 120 can work sometimes, but will lead to imperfections in the final copy. 160 is great, and you can get perfect finals with it in most cases. 200 should be the max you should ever need in most cases. Remember though: the artifacts you see on the screen might be due to the framerate, and not the ompression level.
3. Always use 2 pass orginal is at all possible. The new multipass is no where near as good for quality. I tested this on several files, and found the quality totally unexceptable. It was like I was compressing at half the bitrate. (Uhg...)
4. The audio stream seems to work well as 22050, mono, 16 bit. The compression I use is mpg 3, usually in the 3-4 kb range...
What I really wanted you to know was 1 & 2...
Thanks, and enjoy...
