I've read the posts on ripping DVD's to the PPC. What about VHS movies. I transfered a 1 hour VHS movie to my computer and ended up with a 11GB AVI file. I tried following the last section of the pocketmatrix instructions and still ended up with a 600MB file. What am I doing wrong. Is the original AVI file being encoded wrong? If so, what should I encode the orginal digital video from my camcorder to my computer as?

You're probably not doing anything wrong, you just need to get a 1 GB microdrive. ;)

What size is the guide supposed to fit the video into? If it's just for getting the maximum quality that the PPC can play, it's supposed to end up big.

Check out this review of Ulead Video Studio here. Diane does a good job of telling how to encode for PPC.

What about Divx and pocketMPV. The article was good. How are people getting 2hr dvd's down to 160MB?

Use V-Dub, and make sure you resize the video
No need to have a 720x480 movie on a 320x240 screen!
also I do rotation in V-dub too, and i have the Divx 5
set to 200Kbs.. and the movies turn out pretty good, and
usually end up less then 200MB, which is perfect for my
256 MB SD Cards

Phill, if you are getting an 11GB file, that's before downsizing it and re-encoding it with DivX.

A "raw", uncompressed, full size AVI file will be in that order of magnitude.

As to how do people get a 2 hrs video down to 160meg:
If you read Fibrizio's guide which is pinned on the top of this forum, he suggests to use 128 sampling rate and decimate the frames (i.e. you get 15 FPS from 30 FPS or 12 FPS from 24).

Those two moves will give you the desired size.

As for quality, well, that's up to you to judge.

I personally prefer a 200-256 sampling rate and leaving it at the original FPS. A 2 hours video might just fit onto a 256 card this way...

For Ulead Vid Studio do you choose the Mpeg1 320x240 option at the start screen?
