Worried Alternatives to PocketMVP

Hi there..
Windows Mobile 2003;

I got my 512MB CF with several movie clips, and some music videos, the ones I convert using VIrtualDub works fine with the PocketMVP, however the ones I don't convert ,so say the full screeen ones, get stuck, and they force me to softreset the axim. Sometimes the same happens with regular small sized 340x280 or so, at the end it would get stuck.
Which player is best for divx files or just the files that came outta virtual dub ?

ALso there is a lotta glare on the screen.

I am open to all your suggestions, also the sound of WMP on Mp3's is kinda weird, even with headphones, I will also need an alternative for mp3 files.. Dont need a lot of skins or functionality, simple play and stop with a placebar is enough for me, i am not mixing anything on axim as long as the sound is ok, who cares what it looks like. :)

thanks!

Still nothing? I have been having the same problem with this player lately, seems it cannot handle over certain dimentions of video. I am looking for an alternative divx player.

Thanks

The moral of the story is (and I keep having to continue saying this):

Unless the source video is low-bitrate, with a small screensize to start with, you must re-encode it to work on your Pocket PC.

Do you people honestly expect a DVD (or even VHS) quality video at a screensize of 640x480 to play perfectly fine on a device with a 240x320 screen and, at best, a 400MHz mobile processor???

You are right, but if you re-encode a video at a lower bit rate and with smaller size, for example my video was only 4 MBs and very low bitrate, but at the end of the clip the player (mvp) would just hang and force me to hard reset the axim. I mean it shouldn't do that at least.

However, I am still looking for an alternative, wasn't there pocket TV or something like that out there? I dont think MVP is the only divx player out there, right?

Thanks!

make sure you're using the very latest build of pocketmvp.. it was released a couple weeks ago. fixed the crashing problems I was having before. Also, make sure caching is turned off. turning off avi indexing also helps speed up opening of a file.

Pocket DivX Player is a multifunction video and audio player for the PocketPC platform. You can use it to play DivX, OpenDivX, MPEG-4, MPEG-1 videos and MP3 audio files. It comes with a built-in 10-band equalizer, PlayList Editor and more. Pocket DivX Player can automatically associate itself with MPEG, AVI and MP3 files if you choose to. Additional features include brightness control, web streaming, user configurable cache settings, 90 degrees rotation and more.

PocketTV only plays MPEG videos (in an earlier post).

I haven't tried it recently on WM2003. I am trying to download it to test it out but I am having some problems.

The app however should work on WM2003.

It gave me some problems with my .avi which worked fine on MVP.
As long as you can find the "perfect" encoding combination, MVP works fine, for example I LOVE watching cartoons w/mvp, it works perfectly fine, it is probably because of 15fps. In matter of fact, I just had re-encoded a full Duck Tales episode yesterday, and it played very smooth, and with no major artifacts.

Here is my config:

Audio;

I am not really sure if these will help, but in any case, I thought they may be helpful somehow..

so you're encoding that using decimate frames by 2 (i.e. 15fps?) because if you're playing 320x240 resolution at 30fps i'm impressed!

how's the audio video sync? when I was trying some full screen landscape encodes I had alot of sync issues. when you're converting your audio, do you downsample it to 22khz? or do you leave the audio stream as it is and simply use the mp3 codec?

Only the mp3 codec. Also, the a/v sync was amazing, maybe a split second here and there, but overall I'd have to say, I did a great job with that. Too bad I forgot to save the settings, this was one of the experiments.. :( I will re-encode from the same source , another episode, and let you know what I get.

I left the fps alone, at the source rate. (29.9)

so you're watching it at 30fps? have you checked in pocketmvp to see how many frames are being dropped?
