Divx encoding problem...

I have been using Virtual Dub to try to encode some large mpegs of Curb Your Enthusiasm into AVIs so I can put them on my Axim. I followed the guide provided in this forum and it worked just fine when using a DVD, but not with these files. I keep getting errors when I start the job and I had to upgrade to the latest version of DIVX which is different. I thought I got it to work with the new version, only to find that it was making the files larger and not smaller. Does anyone know what I can do compress these mpegs from 600 megs to under 50 megs?
