so, if I copy a song from the radio on a cassette tape.
then I use a device to transfer the song/audio clip from the magnetic tape to mp3
it is illegal.....
i think it would technically always have been illegal, but it is really worrisome because the format of the MP3 of a small size, and the ease of distribution (internet, P2P communities) made it more effective. No one worried (back in the day) of copying a tape from a friend or the library on your "boom box" or doing an ancient version of edited cut and paste to come up with your own collection from the radio.....

then we can add that the radio pays for its use.
in some countries, the public pays fees for using the radio/television.
Didn't those citizens then also pay for it?

dunno.
I need a lawyer's mind for this one.

I think copying a song from a radio, which we've probably all done - I know I did this a lot when I was a teenager, is not the same thing as harvesting music from the internet. The sound quality is quite a bit different, wouldn't you say? Oh, and taping music from the radio was always a problem for me because I'd get the first part of commercials, sometimes the DJ would start talking at the beginning or ending of songs...we're just not talking about the same kind of quality.

Any way, I was looking around and found this really interesting blog posting:

Hear it, See it-Digital Radio, Audio, and Video: Pandora on Pocket PC

I'd rather do it that way, but alas there's no other way currently to do that. It's actually a hassle to have to download the songs and rename them so that I can listen to them while at work, which has Wifi. I don't keep the MP3's, I just listen to them to see if I like the artist and I'll actually buy the CD if I do (just like the way Pandora is intended to be set up).

I'll delete my post in that thread if you want me to.
Oh, I don't think it's necessary to delete your post. There's nothing wrong with discussion, just posting links and providing detailed instructions would be a problem.

Streaming Pandora's music to a Pocket PC would be a dream! I subscribe to Sirius' internet music and am able to use it on my pocket pc - that's one of the reasons I subscribe to it. I really like Pandora because I like being able to have a play list that is customized to my preferences - it's really a phenomenal service.
