I just tried to convert an existing avi (DivX) with the VirtualDub program, and after setting all the options and following the info at PockMatrix it said the source file was invalid or something like that. What was weird was I could see the preview just fine and it seemed like it would work, but I got that error when trying to save the new AVI. :(

Oh well, I need to get a DVD-ROM drive so that I can do my own rips I guess.

I'm not having any luck with divx and my Axim. I can't even load the daredevil trailer as posted above. Whenever I try to open up a divx file from either Pocketmvp or Pocketdivx, all I get is the little moving clock (or whatever it is) in the middle of the screen, then I have to reset the unit.

What could be wrong? Anyone care to help me figure this out? :(

What's the average size for the movies you guys are getting? Following the guide on pocketmatrix a 90 min movie is about 190MB for me using Divx 5.02. Anyway to make it smaller?

From the PocketMatrix site: You've got to use the 4.12 codec, as 5 is not supported.

It worked for me is all I can say.

Thanks Racer X, but I'm just having fun. This is my first weekend with my Axim, so I am just trying all the cool stuff it can do. :) (Just put PocketQuack on last night too. Pretty cool, if not a tad bit slow, like 9 FPS. It is playable though.)

I have downloaded quite a few mpegs from www.pocketmovies.net and played them with PocketTV. The moves with good quality framerates and sound all seem to be ~2-3MB per minute. Although, I have read about people getting pretty good video with mono, so-so quality, audio at just over 1MB per minute. I really wish 1GB CF card were under 100.00. I have a 256MB CF and a 128MB SD card. If I want to have a good qaulity encoding of a 2 hour long movie I am looking at a file that won't even fit on my 256MB CF card. Maybe I'll get a 512 when they are down to 100.00.

Does anyone use a memory card reader connected direct to the PC? Are the data transfer rates any better than writing to the cards while they are in the Axim connected via USB?

Well I can use Windows Media Encoder, that works with media player, but still no luck with divx, and yes I am using 4.12

The 5.02 codec is supported in the latest version of PocketMVP. That guide is a little dated...but still very useful.

Initially, encoding video for the Axim with Virtualdub is not much easier than balancing, one-footed, on a bowling ball.

But it can be done! Keep trying and tweaking the settings. Start with small, short vids (30 sec commercials, music videos, home movies, etc) to learn the process and work your way up to longer videos.

Virtualdub tip: Before doing the first pass, save your settings! Most likely your first attempt will fail. When you get back to Virtualdub, a simple click will reload all your encoding settings, saving lots of time and chances of making inaccurate (re)entries.

From the Virtualdub screen: File - Save processing settings (Ctrl-S)
Load previous settings: File - Load processing settings (Ctrl-L)

On the subjet of Video, Does anyone know of a site where I can download a free
Divx movie or video? Just like to try one to see if the investment of time to
rip DVD's is worth it.

Thanks

Just seems crazy for ALL of us to duplicate this effort. Surely there is an optimum set of values that work "best" on a PPC.

Unless I don't really understand ... the initial source file compression probably has a lot to do with it.

I agree, Mike, but when is the last time you've seen a desktop/laptop/PPC configured exactly like yours? In the "wonderful world of Windows" the variables are just too great to say "if you do this and jump through these hoops, your results will be this.

I'm still a newbie at the PPC-Virtualdub-videos-in-you-hand world and just want to share what is working for me.

Bingo! From my (limited) experience with my setup, the videos I've tried to encode all came from the same DVD, run through the same equipment, settings similar in software, yet each one produced different results. Can you say, pulling yer hair out?

By the way I have Slowed down my 400mhz axim to 200mhz and played the divx movie perfectly with no flaws.

Useing that guide that many people have posted ( http://www.pocketmatrix.com/guides/dvd2divx/ ) I have gotten a 90min movie to 160MB no problem.
