Movies?! Did someone say movies?!

Dumb question, but can you get movies for you axim?! This would be great for plane trips, but if this is true, what kind of memory would that take and how would you go about getting movies. This is only if it's possible anyway. What's the deal?! Thnks

You can put movies on your Axim. You need a good size storage card and a good media player. Check the multimedia forum for more info.

Usually, you will need to learn how to encode the movies yourself. Check out the multimedia forum for help.

To give you an idea of how much memory you will need, the Shrek movie that I have on my memory card is 89 MB. It just depends on the quality you want.

Thanks for the info, I will check out multimedia forum. I have enough room with the 512mb flashcard but still not sure how to go about the reconfigure. Just one last question before the forum search begins....Can I download a movie from DVD to my laptop without a DVDW? I can put it in another format right or am I way off base? (who brought the new guy?!lol) THanks for the input.

yup, and there is plenty of stuff in the multimedia forum about how to do it. I tried, but I could never get anything small enough to fit on my 256 meg card. Or at least nothing with any re-watch value.

Hey DrHurricane,
I've converted a few movies from DVD to put on my axim, and normally they come out to be about 150-200mb depending on my settings... Here are the Programs I use...BTW you have to have a DVD drive in your laptop or Pc to use a DVD....

I use CladDvd to Rip the Dvd to my computerCladDvd.Net

I use FlaskMpeg to convert to MpegFlaskMpeg

And then I use VirtualDub to convert to Divx to then copy to PPCVirtualDub

Ful instructions here http://www.pocketmatrix.com/guides/dvd/

hey thanks vassil..I will give that a go. I have a dvd/cdrw on my laptop so I it should work...those links are great and I'll get them now. Do you do all three of those actions in a row to fully modify the movie? PS...what a great websit:)

I dont see why you need the last step?

I agree about the reaping and then Flaslmpeg :approve:

However, Flask can output the divx directly.

Virtualdub is a very nice program to edit an avi file, but it is not required.

Another quick question...is there a way I can copy the burned dvd to a cd so I don't have to keep all the movies on my hard drive and still use the cd to download to my axim. Or do I have to keep the movie on my hard drive. I only have a 20GB laptop and would like to keep a small library of movies for long trips. Is this possible?

check out www.bigdsvideo.com He has a step-by-step tutorial on converting from DVD to AVI. His encoding guide is the format that was used to encode the DIVX videos that are available for download from our site.

I use WMV videos on mine and it works pretty well. The quality is somewhere around 236kbs(32kbs for audio) @ 30FPS, and it plays back well on my Axim. It will begin to lag a bit at times, but usally isnt noticable.

As for file size, it's about 2M a minute. I have dropped it enough to be 800K a minute, but the quality is REALLY bad.

I've been using #1 DVD Ripper http://www.dvdtox.com/dvd_ripper.htm and it works great. You can select all the files you want to rip off of the DVD and it will compile them into one file.

Then I use VirtualDub to compress the file to a desired size. I use DivX for my compression rate.

It took me awhile before I was able to rip and compress my DVDs with ease. Although I had alot of help from bigds63. If you haven't already, check out his tutorials http://www.bigdsvideo.com.

Anyone know of a good anything to WMV converter? I have one that works well, but so far I've only be able to use the presets. I found a really nice quality setting to render the video where it's about 600-800K a minute. The video looks very good for the size(I'm even able to read some subtitles) but the audio is quite crummy.

I have a axim x30 with 624 MHz and was wondering for video quality how many kbs could I get before it lags the graphics down? I know The_Other_One said on his he can get 236 kbs on a 400 MHz processor does that mean I can get 300 kbs or more? Thanks.
