I am tired of having 3 apps to play difference vid formats ( PocketTV Pro, withMP3, & RealOne Player ) and am wondering if anyone has suggestions for an all-in-one player? That is, something that will play mpg, wmv, mp3, ram/rm, avi, etc...

Thanks in advance!

That would be great, but I haven't found one yet that will play everything.

Have you been able to use Real One PLayer to play audio files. I have not been able to get Real One Player to work on my Dell Axim 5. If any one has gotten Real Player to work please let me know. Also please let me know which file did you download from Realnetworks. There are several files there to download but none of them seems to be compatible with the Dell Axim 5.

I've spent a lot of time trying to get the Realone player working on my Axim. I've been able to stream audio from a few sites.

Heres what worked for me:

1. The Realone player for PPC uses only the UDP protocol which has problems getting through a firewall. Give your PDA a static IP and put it in the DMZ of your firewall. This will make the ports available.

2. I downloaded the "preview" file for iPaq.

If you set yours up like that, you will probably be able to get a limited number of sites to stream. I think these problems are not peculiar to the Axim, I think all PDAs are having the same problems.

With any luck, Real will update the player to use other protocols. That would probably make it work for all streams.

I was never able to get either version of RealPlayer to work for downloaded RealMedia files. It either wouldn't play at all, or would just play the audio with no video. There was a posted fix at the Real website, but I never got it to work... I finally just bagged it... anything that difficult was not worth it!

Getting RealOne Player to work

I have a Dell Axim 5 and I have finally gotten RealOne player to work on my handheld.
I have succesfully gotten the player to play both audio and video at the same time.
The RealOne Player that I am using is the one for the Jornada 565, 568, 569. http://www.realnetworks.com/mobile/p...ppc/index.html

I am using a Cisco Aironet 340 wireless card with a Linksys 2.4 Ghz 802.11b wireless access point.
I also had to set the DMZ on my router to the IP address of my handheld. Then is opened ports 6970-7170.

The network protocol is set to 802.11b with a bandwith 2Mbps - the same bandwith that is specified in my Cisco card settings.

Finally when ever I try to play a Windows media file or a RealAudio file, the handheld downloads a shortcut of the file and saves it in the My documents folder or one of the internet temporary folders.

In order to play the clip you will then have to double click on the shortcut that was downloaded.

I have been doing this and it works fine everytime.
It is somewhat complicated but if you follow the steps it will probably work for you as well.

Ted,

Are you playing streaming content or files that you download? I've had better results playing files than streaming. The only difference in your setup and mine is the ports that you opened. Although, I would think that when you put your PDA in the DMZ that would open all ports, anyway.

Ted,

Just as a test, can you stream Real Audio from this location:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/ram/live_infent.ram

I can't stream any of the BBC radio stations. You can also go to the bbc.com website and try some of the others.

On the other hand, I can stream this one:

rtsp://raserver.mpr.org/marketplace/current_mpp.rm

Also Virgin radio works. The vast majority of the streaming radio locations I've tried don't work.

Which ones work for you?

Handy,

I will try the link you suggested later this evening when I get home. However, I've used this link and it works great with both Realone and Windows media: http://www.tbn.org/watch/tbnlive/index.htm
It is a religious site so I hope you are not turned off by it.
I"ve also streamed from NPR public radio. I will send you that link later as well. I do not have any real audio files so all of my streaming have been from Internet Radio or TV.
I hope this helps.

Ted,
The Real Audio sources on the link you provided work for me, too.

Even the video connected, although I only received the audio portion on the higher speed links.

I'll be interested to see if you can connect to the ones I provided.

Thanks for your help!

Howerer I was able to stream this one just as you did.
rtsp://raserver.mpr.org/marketplace/current_mpp.rm

There is a very good site which allows you to seach for hundreds of online radio stations. I have located several BBC stations and was able to stream from most of them. Please try the link. It is http://www.radio-locator.com
I have successufully streams from many of these radio stations.
