I just got the Linkin Park dvd/cd combo and want to put in divx so I can watch it on my axim, I just don't have time to watch it at home!
Can I just play the dvd and have it encode right from there or do I have to transfer the whole thing to the harddrive?
Yeah I know i'm new at this and I apologize, if I have somehow missed the thread for this let me know what it's called and don't waste time with this one.
you do have to transfer it to your HD first. encoding directly from the dvd would be extremely processor intensive.
use this link for some help. i would not recomend the part about using Flask mpeg. i use windows media encoder 9 instead. smart ripper works great though.
Bulldog, you can also check out my site BigDs Video Encoding Guides It shows how to Rip your DVD and encode it for your PocketPC....

I saw that in another thread and checked the site out today. When I have time I'm gonna try your stuff and see how it works, thanks for the info guys/gals
you are supposed to put the dvd on hd first? I've always been doing it from the drive using a freeware program called xmpeg. Well, maybe that's why it takes so long to rip a dvd. The program itself is extremely easy to use, and lets you encode in different formats such as divx, vcd, svcd, and some others.

No. Here is the link though. http://www.mp3guest.com/Xmpeg_Index.asp?l=US
It works great. It lets you choose which codecs you want to use, how big you want the files, or just does the default for those who want the easiest options. Warning though. I usually encode using divx 5.1. If you use anything like vcd or similiar formats you might find that the file you get is bigger than the DVD itself. I found this out once when i saw my hd was almost gone, the DVD i encoded was 20 gig! If you stick with Divx though it should probably stay under a gig. Wel anyways, enjoy.

I use Flask and it works great. Smartripper makes VOB files which are normally 4 to 9 gigs. I only have 5 gigs to work with and Flask make them around 1gig. Use the guide at the top of this forum "DVD to AVI" if you want to try flask.
Also, the guide jpmarth noted is for making Windows Media files. If you own Sandisk CF cards you might have a problem playing these on your Axim. I have 3 Sandisk CF cards and none of them can play windows media files. All of my non-sandisk cards can play them.
I make everything DivX which runs fine on the sandisk cards.
I have a sandisk 256mb cf card and switch windows media files back and forth on it all the time...the movies and music play just fine on my ppc running windows mobile 2003...but didn't play so well on my moms ipaq...but i think it was the version of media player she had to run that was the problem..but the divx version played fine on hers on pocketmpv..so now i encode both wayswindows media for me..files a little smaller plus i only need the one program to view it..and divx for her
