Convert VCDs to Mpegs

Hi all~
I own the Star Wars Trilogy on VCD. I want to be able to play it on my Axim. I was wondering if anyone knows how to convert VCDs so that I can watch them on my Axim? Id be willing to try divix too.

Help if anyone can...........

VCD's are in mpeg format. You just need to open the cd on your computer with explorer, and find the folder with the mpeg file. SVCD's are a different story though. They aren't SVCD's, are they? If it is a SCVD, the files are in dat format, and I am not sure how to extract the mpeg from them.

OK I just got through doing this to see if it would work before I posted, and it did so...Both VCD and SVCD creates a DAT file inside the MPEGAV folder on the disc(see by right clicking on drive and choose Explore) Open this folder and you will see the DAT file. Right click on it , choose Copy, then Paste it into your Documents folder or where ever you want to save it. Now once you have the file on your PC, what you need now is TMPGEnc, which is available on my site...Open TMPGEnc, cancel the wizard if it opens up, Now on the VIDEO SOURCE, Choose Browse and choose ALL video types to look for and go to the folder you copied the DAT file to and choose your file. Next choose a name for your output file. Finally click on the load button at the bottom and choose VideoCD (NTSC) . I just did the second half of Final Fantasy that I have on VCD and this process took about 20 min. This will make the DAT file into a workable mpeg file for encoding with VirtualDub or what ever you choose to do with it....Please let us know if this worked for you.....Good Luck

So far it worked good. I used VCDgeer in order to convert .dat to mpeg. Now my question is because it is two discs I was wondering how to connect them together so that I can just encode instead of using movie maker to combind them?
Once I am done I will post the quality

You can also merge the files together with TMPGEnc, see my editing Guide for a walk through....RJ, be advised if you put the files together, watch for the file size...You dont want to make them to big for your card on your AXIM...

I got it loaded on my CF card. it ended up being 189 megabytes. It looks good and not slowing anything down with wmp 9. Now to do the other two.

Great ,I've got the AXIM 300 Basic, so I stick with Divx. It has much better quality. all though wmp9 on wm2003 has improved alot not quite as good as divx...wmp9 must work pretty well with the AXIM advanced huh?

what would be the size of the divix file for Star Wars if I got it to 189 megabytes?

Well the size may be somewhat smaller with divx, but will be close to the same as your 189mb.wmv(depending on the bitrate you encoded at) Not sure on your advanced AX but I think you would like the quality alot better with divx though, for it isnt as cpu challenged as much as to the wmp9 is. There for it plays smoother video, at least thats the way it is with the Axim 300 basic...

Note you would encode the mpeg you got from your ripp to Divx, and not the 189mb .wmv you have....Just wanted to be clear on that:)
