Question from Newby about playing movies on Dell

I am new to the whole PPC, PDA idia. I read that some of you guys watch movies on your Axim. How do you do this?
Are you talking about small video clips or whole 1.5 hour movies?

Yes! to both!

Magic! :D

Seriously, video clips, movie trailers, full-length movies and streaming video/TV have been accomplished with the Axim. The trick is to compress/resize the video file to a format playable on the PPC. Now, getting the file "right" is another l-o-n-g story.

Forgot to give you a link to the starting point:

Pocket Matrix Guide

You can get links to required software there.

Have fun, learn something, come back here with questions and/or tips.

the easiest way to go about this is to use Windows Media Encoder ver.9. unfortunately, you can only use this with WIN XP or 2000. There's a setting built in to convert most audio/video files to a Pocket PC. I would suggest using a CF/SD card reader ie:Sandisk to quickly copy over your files to your memory card.

Well, depends on your patience factor. I've been using CF cards for about 4 years now and the first digital camera had a serial connection cable. I use it to download my first images from the camera. When I woke up and saw that the download was still in progress, I ordered the parallel reader from Sandisk. (USB readers were not available) I would not go back! I now use CF cards like floppy disks, moving info/data/images between desktop/camera/laptop/Axim.

Readers and PCMCIA adapters are cheap and well worth the small investment. USB cradle/cable for the Axim does a good job, but not quite as fast.

I was able to encode a movie, but there is no sound. Any suggestions for the technologically handicapped? :rolling:

Windows Media Encoder. I tried to use the Pocket Matrix guide, but couldn't get a copy of Smart Ripper. Any ideas?

Question

So...I've been all over the net trying to encode a movie also, but I have neither the time nor ability to figure it out.

My question is - can't you buy a movie on a CF disk, or at least on a CD, or download somewhere. Doesn't it seem like there would be a market for such a thing?

Does anyone know where a movie could be (legitimately) purchased, or someone who converts movies for pay?

Check out my quick guide if you have mpegs or avis you want to convert...

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...&threadid=3692

I tried WMEncoder 9...

Did a side by side comparison of 2 files same bitrate compressed with divx 5.0.3 as in the thread above and WMP 9.0 VBR for both....

And on my PC I think WMV looks a little tiny bit better... (mostly because microsoft seems to have mastered "Blur" when the bitrate is low)

However my axim would play the WMV file at about 3 fps if I was lucky... And the Divx avi played full speed...

So WMV has a slight advantage, but you need about a 1.5 ghz axim to get decent video it seems... but maybe I'm asking too much of my axim...

So I wouldn't recommend WMV, but that's my 2 cents...

WMA on the otherhand is quite nice... Better than mp3...

audio corrupt?

Here's a new fly in the ointment.... I got as far as converting audio (ac3) and this is what I got:
Bad Syncword at frame 28051! The AC3 stream is probably corrupt.
Oy! Guess this means I have to start again?
