Size matters (for video)

I have recently gotten into ripping DVD's to play on my axim. Thanks to Big D's excellent tutorials, it was pretty smooth. My questions are:

1) I'm experimenting with the bitrate on TMPGenc to manipulate the size of the movie. I've went as low as 200 kbits/sec and that is probably as low as I want to go. An hour and 45 min video came out to be 210 MB. This barely fit onto my 256 MB SD card. (241 available) I've seen posts where people are getting longer movies to around the same file size. So, to my question....What do I need to do to get the movie file size down? I'm using the template suggested in Bigd's tutorial. I've also used a template I found on PocketTv's web site. But these two templates are still making the file size to big for my SD card.

2) Is compact flash the best/fastest memory to use for video playback on the AX?

ps. I just found a Kingston 512 CF card for 89.99 on Ebay. Couldn't let it pass me by....it's on it's way (Hope the answer to #2 is that CF is better for video.)

Thanks!!

Thanks for the kind words about my site nosrac, Since you are experimenting with the bitrate in TMPGenc to manipulate the size of the movie, I take it you are using Pocket TV as your player on your PPC? If so might I suggest to give divx a try and use PocketMVP as your player. " See Divx Encoding Guide on my site for a step by step" You can play with the bitrate in virtual dub were I suggest 224kbps you can go as low as 150 or so and keep a rather good quality. You will just have to play with it till you get the quality you want. That would give you a much smaller video size but yet just as good or better quality. And with that 512 mb card your getting you can easily fit 2 movies in divx format. Also in TMPGEnc I would highly recommend to stay with the vcd template ,since you took the time to rip your DVD you might as well make yourself a back up copy to play back on your home dvd player. In order to do this you will need to split the video up. I have included a couple Pictures with the steps to do this. Once you select the vcd template in TMPGEnc then choose the setting button next to load and follow the pictures below. Longer 3 hr. movies will require a 3 way split (3cdrs). Then send the files you end up with through VirtualDub for divx encoding to put on your PPC and before you delete the files from your PC , burn them as a VCD. Note you will have to have burning software that gives you the VCD option.

Double click on the source range then move the slider for splitting and set your start point and end points

Thanks Bigds63! I will give it a shot. I didn't know that using divx and PocketMVP would give me a smaller file size. Can't wait for TMPGEnc to finish converting to start. I did figure out how to split the video after I submitted my post last night. (Thanks again to your tutorial) I'm on the second half of my movie.

Do you have any thoughts about the difference between CF and SD when it comes to video?

Thanks again!!!

Just wanted to follow up. I've done 3 movies using the DIVX guide. The movies are definitely smaller, all under 200 MB. Plus they are alot more clearer and stable as opposed to using TMPGenc. Also, regarding the comparisson of SD to CF...I don't see ANY difference. I have a SANDISK 256 CF and SD. Thanks again BIGDS!!

Its a WM9 codec thing that PPC 2002 is not compatible with, but PPC2002 and WM2003, can both use the Voice setting thats why I show that setting in my guide. But if you have WM2003 by all means choose cd if you like.
