I got higher framerate in my movies with DivX 4!!!

Maybe everyone knows about this except me, but anyway. I have for a long period been encoding videos for my PPC. I used the guides at www.bigdvideo.com and successfully reencoded many of my divx/mpeg movies for my PPC. First of all I own an Ipaq h2210 not an axim (sorry), but anyway I didn't like the fact that I only got a framerate at about 7-12 fps in my movies. Today I downloaded a movie from www.pocketmatrix.com and was surprised that they gave me 24 fps (no frames dropped)! I tried taking one of the pocketmatrix movies (in this case the killerbean 3 trailer) and reencoded it in virtual dub. Now when I played the movie in Pocket MVP (latest version) I only got 12 fps! So I tried installing DivX 4 instead of DivX 5.11, reencoded, and now my movie would also be played at 24 fps with no frames dropped!!!

So use DivX codec 4 instead of 5 it's alot faster! Or am I missing something completely here? What are your experiences?!

Just tried encoding a film with the exact same settings, one with Div X 4.11 and one with DivX 5.03 (also tried 5.11), the 4.11 version was a lot faster, with 24 fps instead of 12.

However, now I can't open Xvid files in virtual dub since DivX 4 deactivates DivX 5, anyone here that can solve that problem? One would be install DivX 5, encode movies, install Div X 4, encode movies again... but then again that wouldn't be so fun...

Divx 5.1.1 will also do full frame rate, in my guides when it comes to the frame rate part just dont desimate by 2 and choose process all frames instead...I try to cover a wide range of PPCs thats The reason I suggest decimate by 2 is that most ALL ppc's can play smoother video at this setting. But if you have a stronger cpu PPC then you might want to use full frames

Question

Hi bigds!

I have been visiting your pages many times and find them really usefull, however the decimate by 2 has not been the problem. I have encoded my movies exactly like in your guides with divx 5.1.1 and tried both decimate by 2 and proccess all frames! The strange thing is that when I use divx 5.1.1 I get half the framerate im supposed to get that means if I decimate by 2, i get 6-7 fps and with process all frames I get 12 fps, when using divx 4 however I get 12 fps when decimating by 2, and 24 fps when processing all frames! Maybe there is something strange with my computer or something... it's really strange... Maybe you could post a divx clip encoded with 5.1.1. so I can see for myself? If this is a problem that only I am having, what can I do then to fix it?

I never decimate now after I upgraded to 2003. I use 5.1.1, process all the frames, and have started using high settings like 288 kbps or even higher (since i'm holding 1.5 GB in my PPC and having trouble filling it!), and its EXCELLENT. Crisp, smooth, a great travel companion.

How much bigger are the files if you use DIVX 5.1.1 and full framerate?

So when you create your movies do u use divx 5.1 or divx 4? Half of my frames get dropped when encoding with divx 5.1, and that is when i'm using the exact same settings, those settings beeing the ones found at bigdsvideo.com... Bigd said you could get full framerate with DivX 5, but I don't believe him, I have never seen a divx 5 movie with 24 fps, however my movies encoded with divx 4 always has 24 fps! Anyone have any experience when it comes to this question? Btw I own a fast Ipaq h2210!

Does the decimate by 2 setting just render half the frames? I don't quite understand what it does, because the framerate is reported as half of what it 'should' be in PocketMVP, but the playback is quite smooth on my old Casio e-115.

I'd also like to know what sort of an effect using full-frame has on the file size.

Okey let's clear things out!

Okey, decimate by 2 means that ony half the frames will be used, therefor this is the effect I get when encoding with DivX 4 or DivX 5.1

Original movie: 24 fps

DivX 5.1
Process all frames: I get an fps of 12... :(
Decimate by 2: I get an fps of 6... :(

DivX 4
Process all frames: I get an fps of 24!!! :)
Decimate by 2: I get an fps of 12!!! :)

Can anyone else confirm these results, cause this is what I getting, so my tips would be DON'T USE DIVX 5.1, USE DIVX 4!!!
