Purchase MPEG movie anywhere?
So...I've been all over the net trying to figure out how to encode/convert a movie, but I have neither the time nor ability to figure it out.
My question is - can't you buy a movie on a CF disk, or at least on a CD, or download somewhere. Doesn't it seem like there would be a market for such a thing? I want to buy The Count of Monte Christo (VHS, DVD, whatever) and have someone convert it. Does anyone know where a movie could be (legitimately) purchased, or someone who converts movies for pay?

actually youd open a plethra of problems with good ole hollywood. Illegal issues that is and if people are selling these converted movies than this would be a black market product. Suggestions suck it up and learn how to do it your self. or there is always kazaa or the likes. Problem is making sure it is encoded to play on a PPC seeing that most divix movies are around 500-600 MB and they would be playing on your puny 3.5" lcd

illegal?
So what's illegal about my buying a DVD movie and having someone encode it for me?
With the increasing popularity of Pocket PC devices, doesn't it seem like selling movies in this compressed format on CF cards, downloads, or CD's would be a viable market? Everyone will not want to do it themselves..... JDH

John,
You are tapping into the great stupidity that is the entertainment industry (and many other content providers). They become so intently focused on protecting their property (movies, books, whatever) and their fat profit margins at all costs that they absolutely lose the ability to rationally look at new technology. The record industry fought the compact disc format for years before it came out only to make tons of money (they never would have made otherwise) from the new format. Now, they are fighting the electronic distribution of music in the same way. The movie industry fought the VCR for years. Now, I believe thay they make more money from videocassette rentals than they do from movie theater releases, all the while movie theater revenue has continued to climb as well. You'd think these idiots would learn at one point or another that they should embrace new technologies before the rest of the world beats them to it. Napster probably never would have happened if the record companies had developed a *user friendly* version of electronic music downloads (as opposed to the restrictive pieces of sh*t they are trying to force down consumers' throats now). As your post illustrates, most people would rather pay a fair and reasonable price for something than have to jump through hoops trying to get it for free. Yes, there will be some profit "leakage," but history has shown that new technologies create new profit opportunitites that more than make up for such lost revenues. Stepping off of the soapbox.

all I am saying is the truth I have a friend in college who was making copies of movies for others one day he had all kind of "industry police" up in all his business. A real mess. It within your rights to purchase one and make copies for your own private viewing. your just walking a fine line having people via internet doing it for you and you paying them for that service.
once again I recomend learning to do it your self I am not very smart, but a bit of a self learner and have learned how to do it with practice I found this site most helpful as it provides all the up to date tools and an easy step by step manual. your first few will take some time but once you figure it all out you'll be making copies like nothing. DVD to DIVX for pocket PC any how the selection of films that they are selling you can get at some ole busted out Pawn Shop for $1 oh wait there coming soon has more crappy films. But no, on a serious note let me know if there quality is any good ya know fps, pixelation, sound matching
