Exclamation Convert Any Video Type (avi, Mpg, Etc.) To Wmv Very Very Easily!!

What's with everyone talking about using complex programs and buying video players to use avi files or mpeg files or any other file out there!! It costs money to get other players that play other file types, and the ones that are free work for no more than one or two types of files!!! JUST DOWNLOAD THE ENCODER FOR WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER OFF OF THE MICROSOFT WEBSITE FOR FREE AND YOU CAN CONVERT ANY TYPE OF FILE TO .WMV FORMAT!!!!! It has a real simple wizard that pops up when u start the program and guides u through it - it even has two settings when you encode that are optimized for the pocket pc!! If u dont have windows xp, they still have an older version (i use this one because i have win 98) on their website - just type in Windows Media Encoder in the search bar at microsoft.com and go through the results and ull find it!! Trust me on this---never mess with crappy video players again!!! And its FREE!! I dont know, maybe a lot of people kno about this, but it was right under my nose the whole time, and i just wanna make sure everyone knows about it

Well I have to admit that I was pretty excited about this post when I first read it. I ran over to the site and downloaded the media encoder (it is free!). After encoding an avi file I have noticed two problems. First, after using VirtualDub numerous times, I can tell you that media encoder seems to take a longer period of time to encode. Second, the file, once converted to wmv, had a horrible gap in audio right from the start of the movie. I have never experienced that with any of the 30 or so encodings that I have done with Virtual Dub.

Overall, it seems to do the same thing as VirtualDub (which is also free) with these few differences. I must admit however that the interface is much easier to navigate and the encoder seems to be set up well. Though VirtualDub requires a greater level of knowledge to manipulate, it seems that a benefit to it is just that...more to manipulate. Maybe I will enjoy media encoder more as I experiment with it but for now I will stick wich VirtualDub. Especially after spending hours trying to figure out how to use it properly!

actually, I think we could all benefit from divx going the way of netscape. the netscape code turned into the open source project called Mozilla (current versions of netscape are just an older stable version of Moz with some branding and a few tweaks and proprietary features).

the divx folks are getting a little too big for their britches, bundling adware (gain) with their codec. I'd much prefer to see them go the open source route like netscape did.

Dell X30 High

Used many pdas such as Palm M100, Palm M130, Ipaq 3000 series, View Sonic V36, Axim X5 Advanced, Toshiba e805 and now I am back to Axim X30. What will I use next?....probably will stay with the X30 for a long time. The thing is great.

yea u can still download movies off the internet just once they are done open the encoder and follow the instructions for a pocket pc device - it should compress the file pretty small if u encode it to the preset parameters for a pocket pc :-)

Its not bad and I like the preset PCC setting. I used Primiere 6 via Pluginpac Frame server to feed into MS encoder.

Did a test with the new Thunderbirds trailer. Took a while but did come out fair.

Just wish the MS encoder would take QT as an input file directly! Oh well!

Not so fast

Let's not get too excited. The Windows Media Encoder has very limited support (some would claim, with justification, NONE) for MPEG-2 video...and this is the format of choice for most of the better capture cards!

So this free encoder is a long way from encoding "anythng" into wmv!
