Viewing Wide Screen Videos on My Axim

Hi all~

I just ripped my copy of Days of Thunder from DVD. The only problem is that it is wide screen. I was wondering what the best way to play wide screen on my Axim is?:rolling:

Well...it's a widescreen movie. The frame is a different shape than the screen of your Axim. And the Axim has a tiny screen to begin with. How exactly would you imagine this problem solvable? Greater magnification of the image? This will certainly fill more of the center of your screen, but will chop off the edges of the picture. And still the images will be small!

While I love producing video for my Axim (spending hours a week doing it), let's face it...this is not the ideal device for videophiles! As inexpensive as portable dvd players are, perhaps you'd like to purchase one of them as well for when quality is most important, but carry your Axim for when you want everything pocket-sized!

For wide screen, the best way is to combine three techniques.

First cut 10% of the width on both left and right. Usually you won't notice this kind of change.

Second, compress the aspect ratio a little bit. Again, you won't see the difference.

Third is optional. You can set the resolution width > 320, and thus PocketMVP can switch between two mode. One is wider, smaller. The other is narrower and larger.

See this picture:

It uses method 1 & 2, if encoded with larger resolution, you can taking the advantage of method 3 as well.

The following uses method 3 only.

Combining method 1,2,3 will give you a very pleasant movie watching exprience on PPC. There is a software to do this in one step. You can try it and understand how it works.

Yeah, I usually crop 16x9 tv episodes to 14x9 for the pocket pc ... while normally i hate doing that sort of thing, with the pocket pc it's a simple practicallity thing, the screen just isn't big enough to display the full widescreen...

with a 2.35:1 film, I don't know what i'd do... tv episodes are usually shot 14x9 or 4x3 safe so you can crop them without worrying about missing the action... that is definitely not the case for films, and even more definitely for those shot 2,35:1...

I'd give the above suggestions from Greenland a go, see how it looks.
