Exclamation Limited Success with DIVX 4

This morning, I watched a ripped DVD movie on my AXIM as I rode to work on the subway. It was AWESOME! It sounded great, looked really good (for the most part) and took up a reasonable amount of space on my Microdrive.

I used the instructions and linked apps at Pocket Matrix to do everything. I followed them as well as possible. However, the section about what to do with NTSC movies seemed a bit vague. So I could have screwed something up.

My test movie was a Japanese anime called "Blood" which runs (no pun intended) about 48 minutes. The file displays widescreen at 320x192 and came out to be about 94MB. I encoded it at a bitstream rate of 250kbps for higher quality even though the instructions said 200kbps was okay.

Here's the problem: whenever things move fast on the screen, it appears as if every other line is out of sync. So there's a sort of "striping" effect. When things are moving slowly or standing still the picture is amazing, but it gets a bit distorted by these line sync problems when the action heats up.

My questions are these: What needs to change to make these line problems go away? Also, the instructions and encoding I used was for DIVX 4. I'm running the "DIVX Player for PPC" on my Axim. It's the one that's linked on the instructions page. Does a lot change if I use version 5? Are there benefits to using the later codec? Will the current player handle DIVX 5? Any pointers in the right direction would be truly appreciated!

Hi!

Do these lines ocour if you watch this avi on your desktop-pc or do they just appear on your Axim?

Are they vertical lines or blocks? since you say that these lines ocour during action sceenes my guess would be a bitrate problem, but then on the other hand a low bitrate usually gives it self away by showing macroblocks not lines.

Can you capture a frame and show us how these lines apear?

Sounds like an interlacing issue.

Did you make sure to deinterlace the source material?

It will display alternating lines on some frames with alot of movement which gets really annoying.

Youre better of listening to Fabrizio on this one, you can try to use a deinterlace filter afterwards or try to use another decoder when decoding your DVD

I did not use any sort of de-interlacing filter. As I mentioned the instructions were a bit vague at that point. I'm not even sure how you tell whether your movie is interlaced or not. It sounds like that might be it. The lines I spoke about don't happen every frame. There are some really clear frames that look beautiful. In fact when I look frame by frame on a DIVX player using my desktop, it looks like only some things on screen have the horizontal lines in them. For instance, the background will look fine, but the character in the forground looks like a Jenga tower that's falling apart.

What can you guys recommend as far as DIVX 5 goes? Is it better than 4? Or should I stick with what worked and just iron out this little problem?

2 options at this point... Redo it with flaskmpeg or something and turn on deinterlacing. Or use divx 5.0.3 and virtualdub, which both do deinterlacing.

Look at this thread for a much easier way than the recommended way to rip dvds that can do deinterlacing on the fly...

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...&threadid=3775

Flaskmpeg has built in deinterlacing options.

As for virtualdub and divx look at

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...&threadid=3692

Divx 5.0.3 can be confusing and not work at all if you don't disable profiles... but it allows you to use basic deinterlacing.
Virtualdub's deinterlacing is better probably so you could still use virtualdub and divx 4.12

When you are choosing video compression options in the thread I setup just make sure to add the deinterlace filter as well.
