Can I play movies on my axim?

I have a vent mount for my axim and am currently using it in conjunction with mapopolis and a CF gps reciever as a navigation system. Is it possible to watch movies on my axim while driving? The thought just came to my head and I thought maybe using windows media player or something maybe I could play actual movies while on road trips. Please let me know if this is possible and if so where to get the movie files!

Dude,
Playing movies on your Axim is COOL
Playing movies on your Axim while you are driving is so NOT cool. The reasons are obvious. Hopefully you mean that when you are not behind the wheel, it would be cool to watch movies on your Axim.

I too use a navigation system on my Axim for driving, but that is way different than having a movie playing.

I personally like PQDVD They have a downloadable trial version; very reasonably priced, if you don't mind paying for software that works and doesn't require to to bend over backwards to use.

For everything that you want to do with your AXIM Check this Mother of All How-To's

Of course I am not talking about watching videos while I drive. It's for the passengers and myself whenever I'm not driving. So I have decrypted a dvd using DVD Decrypter on my desktop...now what do I need to do to get these files to my pocket pc?

Once you get the file to AVI or MPEG I would personally use PocketDivxEncoder, it is the fastest divx encoder i have seen around. I can encode a 2 hour movie in about 20 minutes, very fast and easy to use program. Freeware too.

How do I get the file to AVI or MPEG? Right now, after decrypting the dvd, the Video_TS files are VOB. Are these the files I need to convert?:crooked:

I'm not an expert at this, and actually just got into ripping dvd's to ppc when I got my Axim...

Anyway, I believe you need three program:

1. DVD ripper - Rip the DVD

2. DVD2AVI - Convert VOB files (I think)

3. TmpGenc - Make them into MPEG's

I tried it works pretty good, and its all free. The only thing you will need is time to have a finish product. It's very long, and very tedious process.

I'm having seconds thoughts on just purchasing PQDVD, I tried the trial version, and it's very good. One click and you're done.

Which lead me to ask wielmiester: How is PQDVD compared to the other program (I can't remember the name right now), but it's about $10 cheaper, and it encodes it to media files instead of MPEG's...

I tried both, and as far as video is concern they both seems to be the same. I think I like PQDVD for it's on the fly cropping.

Anyway, hope this helps...

Sadly, I tried the PQDVD first and was literally dumbstruck at how easy and how good the final product was. I didn't try anything else after that.

Your options are limited (and that's enought believe me) with two S/W:

What people call PQDVD (Pocket-DVD Studio)
and
DVD to Pocket PC

I have tried Pocket-DVD Studio, and just like wilmiester i was stunned how good the output was, both Audio and Video was stunning on my 5 Minutes Demo encode of Lord of the Rings. (If i knew what it said on the ring, I could even read it on my Axim screen) so that good it was.

I have tried DVD to Pocket PC as well, however it does not present you with the options like Cropping, detailed audio & video size selection and more..

I'd suggest Pocket-DVD Studio be the leader at this time. Of course if you really know what you are doing and what you need to do, there is nothing like your own produce.. (what? you are disgusting!) :) heh.

Anyone else got any other altrernative one click encoding?

Hint: with a little tweaking you can use above s/w to encode FULL SCREEN DVDs into Divx/xviD's (more hint: check the temp files!)

Hi swsmith.

If you need links, take a look at the tutorial & review section of aximsite. There are enough links to let you know how to encode video ready to play for PPC.

PocketDivxEncoder is the best free solution - you get better quality using divx/xvid (both of which are supported by PocketDivxEncoder) for a given bitrate - i.e. either smaller files or better quality (or even both).
