MS Encoder

For those of you who use encoder, I could use some help. I am running a 500mhz pIII with 384 meg of RAM running windows XP professional. Everytime I try to encode a file Encoder does the following:
1. runs at 100% CPU usage
2. Will make the first pass with out trouble, however wil only do the first 2-5 seconds of the output encode.

This is very annoying, every file I try to encode no matter the extension or size, or what I have the computer doing ie I can turn everything off but encoder and it does it...Encoder worked for the first 2 files that I did several months ago. Haven't tried uninstalling then reinstalling.

But I dont have a DVD onthe computer so most of the files are from firends, or dig cam or stream.

Is there a better way to do this, Is my computer just too old to handle? Is anyone else having this problem

PS I have changed the audio compression size per MS release to 64/44

Thanks

Hey DMK,

Have you tried doing a single-pass encode? Assuming you're running everything through the wizard...

On the last screen, uncheck the 'Start encoding when I finish' box. Click 'finish', and this will close the wizard and bring you to the main screen. Once there, click on the 'properties' button. Once in the properties window, click on the 'compression' tab. There should be a box at the bottom called 'two-pass encoding'. Make sure this box is unchecked, and then hit 'apply settings.' Once settings have been applied, click on the 'start encoding' button.

I've had the same problems with two-pass encoding, and instead of trying to figure out why I just bypassed it altogether! Hope this works for you!

Scott

in response to #1

Untill i built my new machine, i always ran at 100% processor when encodeing, now it fluctuates between 33% and 70% my old machine was a 1.4mhz with 512ram so the 100% processor is normal

as for #2, scott is dead on

For the sound. You can crank it all the way down to 22mbits Stereo and not notice any difference.

If you still have problems i would recommend PocketDivxEncoder. It is free, faster, better layedout and works great.
