Cannot play AVI with MVP!!

Hi Guys,

I ordered my Axim online but until I receive it I am still using my good ol' Casio E-125.
Now I have tried to convert a full movie using Virtual Dub with the recommended settings on this site. That all worked out just great and on my desktop it played well.

I installed an older version op pocket divx player because the MVP-site was down at the time. The film played but with a lot of blocks in the images, prob due to the old version of divx player and the fact I used divx code 5.

Now, yesterday I downloaded the MVP player from the official site, the program loads, and I can play MP3's so I guess I installed the right version correctly, but when I open the AVI from my Memory Card, when I press the play button, I get a black screen for a second or two and then my pocket pc switches to the today/settings screen...it seems it automatically closes the program MVP when trying to play my avi...

Close, but no cigar...!!!!

Any suggestions???
If the Axim were a woman, I would marry her!!!

screen resolution (320x240 or less)
aspect ratio (keep close to original)
frame rate (~250fps or less)
audio codec used (mp3 works for me)

Try to check these for starters. Encodes may be "close", but they will crash PMVP. (as you've seen...)

So it is possible that because the settings I used to encode are not the way they should be, it will run on the former pocketdivx player (except the blocks due to codec 5 divx) but MVP will crash on the movie???

I will re-encode tonight and test this...keep you guys informed.

Use the test file in the guide thread and see if your pocket mvp works if not, you might have some leftover dlls from pocketdivx.

I encoded MI2 with these settings

250 kb/s
mp3 layer
15 frames/sec
rest of settings like in doc on this site

Output file came out as 380 MB, too much for my 256 Mb flashcard.

Now I am encoding on 150 kb/s to reduce the size...

let's see what happens!!!!

Just curious, databoy, stereo or mono?

I'm looking at 2mb/minute for a minimum goal for movies. At that rate you should get ~2 hours on a 256 card. What is the run time for MIB-2?

For High quality stuff for me I use this...

192kb 2 pass divx5.0.3
64kb 44khz mono mp3
frame rate 12-15 fps

and my files are about 1.9megs / minute

Looks great to me... I've done some trailers this way I can upload and demo them if you'd like.

I used the following settings

video compression: Divx codec 5 (the latest) 250 kb/s
320x240
15 f/s

audio conversion 22050 hz/8 bit mono
audio compression mpeg layer 3 32kbit/s 22050 hz mono

i saw these settings on a forum and they should be ok
but i still het a movie with 380 MB

I tried lowering the 320x240 to 240x180 and the output file is even larger...

Do you use Original 2 pass vbr? If not your file sizes are going to vary... 2 pass vbr sets a constant bitrate for the entire movie and uses more or less depending on the complexity... the 1 pass methods will produce a bigger file for about the same quality.

I got the same thing happen on my Axim last night. It was the first time i had used and hadn't installed any previous pocketDivX player. The screen went black and the previous program i was using appeared. I had to perform a soft reset in order to get out of pocketmvp.
let me know if you find a way round it.

I rigorously followed all the steps in the manual on this site, except for the 2x 2pass method, got some .dll error msg when starting the 2 pending jobs, so I tried 1 pass, came out with a file of about 130 Mb so this should do it, it fit well on my 256 CFlash.

When trying to play the file on my pda, I get a black screen for an instant and then I return to my Start/Program Files screen...

When I scroll the bar under the video I can see each frame, so ...

Don't know what to do

Meanwhile I did a hard reset on my device to make sure no old dll files would interrupt, but the problem still occurs...

Did you try to play a divx encoded with bidirectional frames?

I used Precise Bicubic (A=-1.00) as mentionned in the manual, also tried some of the other settings in this list...

don't know what to do, gettings pretty desperate, a year ago i encoded many movies and they worked fine with divx 4 and the old pocket divx player,

now with divx 5 and the new player and can't seem to get it work

damn
