Does anyone have experience re-installing Windows Media Player 7 on the Axim?

It's not version 7..

It's 8.5, and you don't reinstall, it's in ROM...

You don't want to downgrade it...

I checked back at the MS site, and it does say 7.1, and the version on the CD is 7.1 ... but the install says it's not a compatable device.
As far as downgrading Media Player ... that may be a step in the right direction. The current player is hobbled w/ "features".

It's in ROM and the OS is designed for 8.5. You'll just confuse the system (Have to hard reset) if you try to downgrade it... If you don't like the features, try another player, like pocketmvp, but leave the internal player at 8.5, which it is...

Microsoft does not have an updated version on it's website...

Your PDA (Axim) has 8.5 and you shouldn't install anything from MS's site..

I know better now. Thanks for the advice.
All I want to do is get WMP to play a bleeding mp3!
It's like this ... I encoded a bunch of stuff in WMA, which means WMP. OK. I have other stuff in mp3 I want on the same playlist, but WMP doesn't see it. How do I re-establish WMP's access to mp3s? (assuming it ever had it).
I may have associated PocketMVP w/ mp3, but that should not have crippled WMP, eh?

Slightly frustrating, but I'll get it one way or the other.

OK, what you're talking about is restoring File Associations.. Those are registry based... I haven't done that yet.. I found this info tho, might help...
__________________________________________
Tip #100: Changing File Associations

Why do .jpg image files open automatically in Pocket Internet Explorer when you tap them? Because that file type—".jpg"—is "associated" with that application. Can you change this association, so that .jpg's will open automatically in another image-viewing application? Yes, you can, and you can change other file associations as well. But you can't do it with the File Explorer that comes with your Pocket PC. File associations are created in the Registry of your Pocket PC, and the Registry is not accessible through the Pocket PC OS interface. (This is because even a slight error in editing the Registry can make the machine unusable.) If you are technically minded, you can get a Registry editor and make the appropriate changes to the Registry yourself. (Please, back everything up first!) For a list of free and shareware Registry editors, see http://www.pocketpcmag.com/Jul01/reghack.stm . Or, you can use an application like PalmTweak, a free program that can change file associations and many other system settings as well, such as system fonts, scrollbar settings, and device power off time. PalmTweak can change your Registry settings (and change them back) without endangering the functionality of your device.

Thank you very much for the info. I just this minute got finished installing DEXplorer, which has the ability to change associations and reg edit and a bunch of other stuff. See it here.
