virtualdub is great, much more involved however, IMO.

if you're gonna get really into it, my personal favourite selection of tools is dvd decrypter following by avisynth and virtualdubmod... but that's a lot of work to get right :)

Well, it ended up being 750 MB. That sucks. I am going to try it again and let it go overnight. Hopefully in the morning, I will wake up to a file I can put on my Axim. And I do have beta player. Any other suggestions?

something is definitely wrong there.... i've got no idea what though... the estimated size was about 230mb, but it came out at 750mb?? hmmmmmmmm. really very odd.

try the preview button and see what comes out?

Would it have anything to do with the audio stream? I can choose from:

English AC3,6,128
English AC3, 6,129

Shouldn't I have one with AC3,2?

no, that's what's from the DVD - both 6 channel - i guess the first one is what you want. I assume PDXE downsamples 6ch to 2ch - when i'm doing manual encodes that's what I do using besweet.

hmm... try unchecking the "xvid" box and going back to avi with mp3 rather than ogm with ogg... and try preview again...

"very high quality" -- I have no idea what that does.

Well, it looks like the problem stopped when I unchecked 2 pass encoding and VHQ. It more than doubles my filesize. When I unchecked it at 1% finished, as I was watching the file, it was at about 2 MB which in the end would make it around 200 MB. But when I do 2 pass, it is about triple. Why does two pass encoding make it so much bigger? Does it make the movie better quality?

yes, two pass encoding should give you much better picture quality for a given bitrate, because it knows how it can "spend" the bitrate - i.e. if it knows that the second half of the movie is very "quiet" visually it can then spend more bits on the first half of the movie.

weird... perhaps the two pass encoding is broken in PDXE... I'm sure I've used it before though.
