PocketDivxEncoder
I keep hearing how great this program is. And it seems to work good for me, but I cannot get my movies under 256 MB so I can't try them out on my Axim. My Lord of the Rings is 308 MB. Can someone who has had successful results give me a step by step guide on how they did it. From ripping to encoding.
Hurry, I want movies!!

Lord Of The Rings is an enourmously long movie, you're probably not going to get the best quality out of it and still fit it inside the 256MB (well, 240MB actually).
The only things you can try are:
In the advanced options, check "B-Frames", "xvid", "OGM with ogg audio stream" and "2 pass encoding" (these will give better quality, although will be slower to encode).
Once you've done that, select your input file, and adjust the audio and video quality sliders until it fits within 240MB.
Personally I'd use Audio=4 at a minimum to get decent quality stereo sound.
If you then can't get the video size to less than 240MB odd then basically, the video is just too long to get into that space... as I say, LOTR is a VERY long film, perhaps not the best one to try and fit inside 240MB.
hope that helps some.

Even when I try the film "Miracle" it is still well over 240 MB. I only have the video quality to 5 and the audio is only at 3. For a movie like Miracle, should I be able to make those settings higher?

How long is it? according to IMDB 2h15m - do I have the right film? I'm sure you should be able to get that within 240MB... set the settings like I said above and knock the video quality down 'til it goes below 240MB, give it a go. Obviously moving the video quality slider has much more of an effect on the file size than the audio one - because the video takes up more room.
Let us know how you get on :D

just had a play around with a random 3h20m video file i'd got laying around - with a video quality of 1 (94kbps) and audio quality of 1 (24kbps) that comes in at around 230MB - so you should definitely be able to get Miracle on there with reasonable quality - and lord of the rings with those quality settings (1 & 1) - I'm pretty sure the quality will be unwatchabley bad at 1 & 1, so LOTR probably isn't going to be viable, but Miracle certainly should be.

I do have the latest. I am about 40% through. Guess I will run downtown and get a drink while it finishes.

230 MB or something close. I did 2 pass though, so it is taking a while.

It's 85% and the file is already 400MB+! Is it because I did 2 pass? Does that make the file bigger? I know it said the final size would be about 230. Frustration is setting in.

hmmmmmmmmm how strange.... i've never actually watched the file size along the way, it could be that the first pass is much bigger than the second pass -- there are two ways of doing a 2 pass encode, one does a first pass recording info about the video but nothing else, the other does a first pass basic encode of the video creating a larger intermediate file, and recording information about the video, then does the second pass to encode...
I wouldn't worry too much until it's finished... is it 85% of the first pass perhaps?

It is 90% second pass and 95% total. So it should be done in a couple of minutes. I will let you know what the final result is.

You might want to give VirtualDub a try. I have a step by step guide on the settings to use. Although you have to convert your .vobs before using VirtualDub if you have not done so yet. Look at the DVD ripping section for that....Anyway following the steps on my website from DVD to a final divx, here is the last few movies Ive done...Tears of the Sun...143min.= 218MB....Theres Something about Mary...134min.=211MB...And a bit long but for a 143min. Pirates of the Carabinea is at 242MB....So that should give you some ideas on what size to expect using the settings I have....But like Sheepy said LOTR is just to big for a 256MB card to keep a good quality....Good Luck
