PocketMusic vs. WMP
Can anyone give me a good reason why I should use PocketMusic over Windows Media Player for playing mp3s?
I cant seem to justify keeping PocketMusic on my Axim. PocketMusic takes up 429.0 KB and the GUI is pretty poor in my estimation. The button are very small.

I use pocketmusic for now, and it offers slightly better sound quality, thoguh I am still using the free, limited one. it has EQ, which is kind of useless on such a small unit though... I am going to try and find a better MP3 player though. as for me, the 400K doesn't make too much difference though, since I currently have 200 megs of MP3s...

Personally, I've got several players loaded, but the one I use the most is GS Player. It plays, MP3, Ogg, and streaming MP3 (like shoutcast and live365).
It sounds good and it's free. Not the most beautiful interface, but I prefer it to PocketMusic.

Well - to be honest the *only* reason I use WMP is because it plays WMA files, which are (from what I understand) smaller and better quality than the "other" formats such as OGG.
If I were you, and I'm not... but if I were, I'd say go with anything other than WMP. Its ability to handle music is pretty poor. The shuffle functionality is the worst I've seen in ANY audio player (PPC or otherwise) and I've seen some pretty bad ones. I swear, their algorythm is broken, badly.
So, basically - ignore WMP and at LEAST go with something... ANYTHING else. It'll be worth it, even if you have to pay a bit for it.
HTH,
Nick

I agree, WMP is the worst of the lot. I only use it for WMA, too. I thought that Ogg was supposed to be a better format than WMA. Does anyone know if that's true?
Also, Ogg is used in more players than WMA and it seems to be on the rise.

I tried it out.. the audio quality is terrible in my earbuds, all I hear is crackling and popping. <returns to pocketmusic> some of the menu options and so forth were pretty interesting, but audio quality is #1 for me...

I haven't had any problems with GS Player. I play through headphones and also through my receiver. It sounds great, either way, just like playing a CD. I'm streaming Ogg and MP3 files over wi-fi, not even playing them off the Axim.
You must have some other problem with the way you're using it.

1) load playlist file
2) click "play"
3) minimum volume makes all those horrible noises, like crackling and popping
4) open the smae file in either WMP or pocketmusic, it plays fine
I can't think of anything else that woudl be causing it... but I'm interested in it for actually listenening to them from a CF card... I just don't tihnk that PocketMusic is worth the $20 for the additional hotkeys, cascading playlists, skins, and EQ settings.

Hmm... I'm puzzled about why you're having problems. What kind of files are you playing and how are they encoded, (bit rate, etc.)? Are you using the latest version of GS Player, 1.76?
Is your Axim a 300Mhz or 400Mhz? I'm playing on a 400Mhz.
Also, you might try this to see if it helps. Go to Options> Options > Decoder and increase the number of buffers to, say, 10.
Also go to Options> Options > Streaming and increase the Buffering and the Prebuffering both to 512.
I wonder if other people are having similar problems with GS Player?

Pocket Music plus package is pretty cool, you can load any winamp2 skins which makes to a much nicer user interface IMO and in the future it will be supporting .wma .ogg and media streaming, what more can you ask for?
Also the EQ is awesome man, it does make a difference, if you get the plus package you get a lot of different presets that change the EQ and there are major differences in the way the presets make the music sound so it definatly isn't useless.
Once Pocket Music uses .wma I can't see using WMP for anything anymore.
~400k is nothing, put it on a CF card or something, run it form there.
This player has great support as well, I think GS player is just too obscure for my tastes and I really can't find anything to coimplain about with Pocket Music.
This is the skin I'm currently using:
these skins are much better then anything out there currently in a pocket pc player, and theres a huge selection of winamp2 skins out there.
later fellas.

Well, when PocketMusic plays all of the formats I like, especially the streaming stuff, I'll probably buy it. Until then, I'll use GS Player. Free is good!
