Streaming music to an X30

Hi

I have an X30 624, a wireless lan, a desktop running xp pro with 5,000 CD ripped to mp3 format on it.

I would like to stream the music to my X30.

The wireless lan works fine, I can see recources on the pc from the x30.

How can I stream music to my X30?

I don't want to buy software, is there no way to make media player do it?

If not what are my options?

Many thanks

David

Windows Media Encoder - free download from Microsoft. Then open it on the PPC using Windows Media Player

I just did this with my new Axim X30 using free programs and it works beautifully.

First install Total Commander. This will let you access a network drive where you store your MP3s.

Next, install Pocket Music. One wierd thing I found was that it asks you for a reg code, which it says is available for free, but when you click on the link it just takes you to a page about the software. What I did was search on the page in Google, clicked on cached version, entered in the info it wanted, and it gave me my reg code.

Now that you have the programs installed, you can either click on the MP3 name or playlist name in TotalCommander and it will play in Pocket Music with no problem. Works perfect for me with no skipping or hiccups!

I've done this with plain old mp3's over the home network, which is fine.

But i'm wondering if theres a way to get to my specific computer on an Axim over a school network?

So I could stream audio files off my own network when i'm on the university campus network?

There have been multiple threads on the subject, and yes it is possible to use it over a large network but I wouldn't recommend it.

The method I use to stream when I am on my home wireless network is to use a program like Resco Explorer or Net Use to map a networked directory full of MP3's on my Axim (shared from a PC of course) and then access them directly with your music player of choice. This has the benefit of allowing you to easily choose what's playing immediately.

Another method is to stream via the Windows Media Encoder, however you'll have to use another program if you want control over the playlist from your Axim.

For the school network, you're gonna half to poke a whole in your personal network's firewall to be able to access it. The best method would be to tunnel in via VPN, however there are multiple other options. If you don't have a static IP, check out dyndns.org for some solutions. You're quality will be greatly affected by your upload rate, so YMMV.

Like I said earlier, a search of this site ought to get you enough info to get started.

Greetings,

I can't find NetUse for download anywhere? Anyone know if it is still available...the original website seems to be dead? I googled, but came up short...thanks.

I'd been copying mp3's to my local storage on my new X30 and then stumbled on a way to do it much easier. I use file explorer to access the network drive on my desktop, tap on an mp3 file, select "copy". Then go to my local storage on my X30 and "paste shortcut". Then you can just tap the shortcut and media player will play the file over the network. The shortcut is <1k in size and you can put shortcuts to all your favorite songs on the X30 that way. I do that with music, movies, and just about anything else I want to have access to but don't want to keep physically on my X30.
