Hi, I used Shrink to extract the vob, and followed the tutorial exactly (installed AC3 and all). The VOB plays perfectly fine in WMP and other players. However, when I start the encoding process in WME, I get the error saying "The requested audio codec is not installed on this system" I have installed the AC3 codec before as well as after the installation of WinDVD- still I get this error. Any idea what could be the problem?

Does anyone understand the original post above. The post initially says no encoding or time. But I've used this encoder and it does encode and it does take a long time (hours)???

I just used DVDshrink and WM encoder 9 to convert a dvd. But when I play it back it is green like it is scrambled. What is going on?

FlaFoci: B4 ripping with DVD Shrink:
For DVD Shrink edit/preferences/output files/deselect “Split VOB files”.
You only want one VOB file, deselecting "Split VOB files" will make one
VOB file.

High quality WMV for your PPC Easy and Free. GUIDE:
This method will encode a WMV movie straight from a VOB file – no encoding to AVI or MPEG needed, which saves hours. You will not believe the quality as compared to using programs such as PocketDIVXEncoder, Dr. DIVX, AutoGK, etc. It does not compromise on audio and video quality like those programs in order to. Best of all, all tools needed are free, and you won’t need additional viewing software (i.e. betaplayer) on your PPC. WMP will play it nicely in fullscreen/landscape mode.
What programs you need:
Install Windows Media Encoder
Install Intervideo WinDVD (WME needs the Audio/Video decoders in this program. You do not need to purchase, demo version is fine)
Get DVDShrink or DVD Decrypter if you don't already have these.
Take these steps:
1. Rip your DVD to your hard drive using DVDShrink or DVD Decrypter as you normally would. For this conversion, though, you will need to be sure that you create only one VOB file. To do so be sure the setting in each program is correct. For DVD Shrink edit/preferences/output files/deselect “Split VOB files”. For DVD Decrypter tools/settings/IFO Mode/Options/File Splitting/None
Also it would be optimal if you do not use any compression in DVD Shrink, unless of course you have a FAT32 file system and cannot create files larger than 4GB. This will allow WME to make the highest quality file possible.
2. Start Windows Media Encoder
New Session > Convert a file
Browse for the VOB file you just created as the source file
Enter Output file name and location >
Encoding options > Pocket PC >
Video: Pocket PC widescreen video (320X240)
Audio: CD quality audio >
Enter desired “Display information” >
Deselect : “Begin converting when I click Finish”
Click Finish
****at this point it may seem like WME is hanging, but it’s not, just analyzing the video, give it a minute******
Click on Properties
*****I wouldn’t mess with much here, unless you know the exact cropping settings you want. Otherwise let WME do the magic. I would suggest trying out this method with just a small clip of the movie you want to use, that way you can see quick results, and you can decide if you want to change any of the properties. ******
Click the Output tab. Select "Limit by size:" and choose the MAX size you want for you PPC movie.
After you’ve messed with the properties just click “Start Encoding”.
With my system – PIII933/384MB/WINDOWS2000 – it took about 3.5 hours to encode (2-Pass!) Office Space.
Hope this guide helps!
Please feel free to add any pointers and screen shots.
I also have a five-minute clip of Office Space, which was made using this method. How might I post it so that everyone here can access it? It’s about 9mb.

How big is your file for a 2 hour movie. I use Dr. Divx and can get the movie to around 150-200 mb w/ decent quality. It also takes me about 2 hours to compress to Pocket PC size. Thanks.

That sounds like an old ATI issue, are you using an ATI video card on your PC ? If so updating the drivers for your ATI will take care of it.

Why is this so hard??
I have tried DVD Decrypter with no avail. I am tring DVDShrink. Both programs I told it to not split, but I manage it is always giving me 7 or 8 vob's? Why? Also when I even try to use WME9 it says not the right codecs. I have WinDVD4 loaded. Does this not give it the right codecs?

OK - I am at the end of my wits (although I think I have identified the problem, I'm not sure how to correct).
I have ripped a DVD to my hard drive using the method above (DVDShrink).
I have used WME to encode/convert the VOB to a WMV. The video is spectacular, but I get no audio when played on my Axim X5 (WMP 8.5). The WMV, when played on my PC (WMP10), DOES have audio.
It appears that is because I used WME 9 to encode/convert and the audio codec is now WMA 9, but the Axim only has WMP 8.5 because it has Pocket PC 2002 Premium. If this is truly the problem, what are my options? Can I change the audio codec WME 9 uses or do I have to go to WME 7.1?
Or if someone has a different idea, please let me know.
Thanks.

Can you convert DivX movies to WMV through this program? or will it just lock the program up (like it's done with mine :p...)

In the end, it's just way too much trouble.

I was running into an audio/video sync problem for a while when converting avi's to mpg's; audio would drift 6 seconds by the end of 90 minutes. The solution is a little program called PVAStrumento, it adjusts for dropped frames (which are the cause of the sync issue) and demuxes for ya.

I was able to find a MPEG codec compatible with WME. It doesn't have a trial period, it's free, and it's only 100k zipped. You can find alot more free codecs here as well.

I didn't have such a good experience with the free MPEG codec -- it was going to take a day and a half to encode a DVD. When I used WinDVD, it only took about an hour.
