tiny unusable files

I'm getting the same problem that was posted earlier -- small output files (11k-16k) that are worthless.

WXP Pro SP2
DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15
WME 9.00.00.2980

I can verify w/o wasting a lot of decoding time by pulling up

Properties -> Source -> Mark In/Out

and spotting a less-than-one-second Duration.

I'm not sure how to correct this problem (either during ripping or in WME).

Problems with WME 9

I can rip my DVDs fine using DVD Shrink 3.2. However, when I try using Windows Media Encoder 9 to convert the .vob file to wmv it hangs about half way through the second pass. I tried using a single pass and it hung at the same place. This happens when trying to convert iRobot. Any suggestions?

Another problem... this one more general... when I encode videos with WME 9.00.00.2980 I end up with really low volume. Any ideas?

Hmm Encoding issues

OK, I'm wondering what on earth I could have wrong here. I had originally been doing a 2 step process going VOB->AVI, and then using WME to go from AVI-WMV but that takes so long and it's so iritating. So using this guide, I installed WinDVD7 trial (which according to some will expire and void this method), installed AC3filter, rebooted.

When I open the VOB with WME it takes about a minute as expected, but refuses to encode more than 1:15 mins. from a 11 minute file. Even if I try to force the Mark In-Out option longer it tells me that setting is invalid. Fails with either 2 pass or 1 pass.

Is it just my VOB file, or is this whole WinDVD, AC3filter thing a bit messy?

And does anyone care to want to comment on why M$ just doesn't fix WME9 to be able to handle MPEG2(VOB) files diretly without a hack? These are unencrypted files anyway!

Thanks!

That isn't a hack. You are installing the WinDVD to get the DVD codecs. WME takes whatever codecs and is able to use them (like WMP is able to do to play).

Windows doesn't come with DVD codecs. Once you install a DVD codec, you can play movies in WMP and in WME.

The only reliable fail-safe way to encode VOBs with WME is by frame serving.

Has anyone been successful with this method? I have attempted 5 times with no luck. The last time it was looking good, so I left the room to let it finish. I came back in about 10 minutes and my PC was off!

Here's a stupid question: Which "VOB" file do you encode? After using DVD Shrink I have about 4 VOB files. I did deselect file splitting.

Solved

I think this is the problem with curtailed WMVs from DVDs

See Codec section 4.8 here

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...r/faq.aspx#4_8

BTW I'm using IFO mode in DVD Decrytper with no file splitting to get a VOB, and rename the .vob to .mpg.

Now I'm using a CBR audio profile it seems to be working

I use PocketDivXEncoder 3.6 to encode my DVDs to 950mb files (To fit neatly on 1gig SD), and I never have a problem. Is WMV better quality/mb? I see some of you saying that you re-encode from .avi to .wmv, is there some sort of quality advantage in using .wmv that offsets the quality loss from re-encoding?

In short, the question is, why WMV over DivX?

Ok I followed your instructions and ended up with one large m2v file after using dvd decrypt. Why does wme9 crash when i open this file?

The name of the file seems correct demuxed and in mpeg2 720x480 ntsc with a m2v extension.

So why after all this legword does wmv9 encoder crash as soon as i open the video file?
