DVD ripping.

This is getting old quick. I have found dozens of stupid guides and every single one of them has had huge flaws. WHERE can I get one that works. No dead links, no missing files, just A to Z ripping???

For instance. I get half way through a step by step guide and I get "In the "Compressor" drop box, find and select Divx 5.0.3 then click "Configure""

The problem with that is that it never told me I needed that, and it doesn't tell me where to get it. SO I look all over, download latest version from divx.com, and install, and come back, still isn't in drop box. Now I have no ripped file and even less free time.

Anyone willing to put up a guide that includes instructions that work?

bigdsvideo

I had the same problem. I tried half a dozen different things but wasn't satisfied with any of them. But now I think I've found a good one.

Have you tried bigdsvideo.com?

I followed the tutorial for "Ripping DVDs" and "Windows Media Encoding" and his methods work like a charm. Programs I used were SmartRipper, DVDx 2.2, and Windows Media Encoder 9. Best of all, the programs he uses are FREE! It does take a few different programs for the whole process and does take a long time to go from DVD to PPC, but it is worth it. I haven't tried his divx/avi encoding method. Also since he is an active forum user you can send him a pm and he may be able to help you. Anyway, good luck to you and check out bigdsvideo if you haven't already!

Thanks, I may just give up. I was going to do it for a surprise for my wife, who loves disney films but there are other things I can do for her.

The fact is, spending all this time trying to get a few stupid movies on my PPC is cutting into my time with her, but thanks for the suggestion, someday I may have the time to give it a try.

I really dislike it when you have to transcode twice. I've written a guide here that doesn't have this intermediate step. If you have any questions feel free to ask, and if you're nice about it I may just reply.

I had the same problem. I searched for about 2 weeks to figure out how to do it. I found that with fair use wizard you don't have to do ANYTHING. In one piece of software you can do it all. And, if you forgo the "full auto mode", you probably don't have to transcode it twice if you mess with the settings, i.e. change the output file size to 200mb, fiddle with the settings. But I prefer to twice "transcode" it so that I can burn one copy to a cd.

Fair Use Wizard

Here's my guide:

1. play dvd on pc with windvd or whatever
2. open fair use wizard
3. click on "full auto mode"
4. click on "i agree"
5. make up a name for the project
6. set the destination folder
7. click okay
8. wait 2-4 hours
9. play the .avi file

Later, use pocket divx encoder to encode and betaplayer to play.
