problem with large mp3

I have several large mp3 files (they are a series of 1-1.5 hr long lectures) that are anywhere from 10-20 mbs in size. I have no problem playing the files with windows media player on my axim. But if I try to use the slider bar to fast forward, once I get beyond about 10 minutes into the file....no sound. Any ideas on why this is happening and how I could fix it?

Worried reply

Have you tried playing the sound files on your PC in Windows Media Player? It might be that your recorder crapped out midway thru recording. I suggest trying to listen to it on your PC and see if it does the same thing.

Nope. The file does fine playing on my laptop. Also, if I just listen to the file from start to finish on the Axim, it will play all the way through. It just won't allow me to use the slider bar to fast forward. I wonder if it has something to do with how memory is allocated on my axim (i.e. won't load so big a file into memory).

Worried re: prob

Hmmm.....maybe try converting the MP3 to WMA format with a lower bitrate...like 26 kbps, and then put it on the Axim and try seeing if it will work better. The conversion will cut the size of the file in half almost, and that may make it easier on the axim.

Can I ask how you recorded these?

Did you use the Axim to record the file?

Can you use the Axim as a dictaphone/recorder?

recorder

Yeah, supposedly you can use the axim as a recorder. It is equipped with a mic along with the speakers.

I have the same kind of problem: move the slider forward and the sound is gone :rolling:

I didn't record these on my own. I downloaded them off the net. But, as mentioned above, you can record voice notes using the Axim.

Anyone answered this yet?

I have the same problem. With large(long) MP3 files, if I let them play, they play fine, but if I use the the slider bar, the program freezes for X amount of time, then it starts to play at the spot where the slider bar is.

I say the program because it does it with WMP and Pocket Music.

It appears that it's having to read ahead thru the file, almost in real time to find the spot.

Has anyone found a way around this.

The files I'm using are 56kbs & I'm NOT interested in conveting them to Windows media (so please don't suggest that).

Thanks!

unwilling

If you're unwilling to convert them, then I suggest that you merely stop trying to fast forward!

"withMP3" doesn't behave that sticky. I use a few 192kbps complete CD's (around 60 to 80 MB each) and I can jump around just fine. It cost some bucks though.

Try setting the processor speed to max, it helped me with some skipping problems.

GSPlayer solves the problem!

Thanks to (almost) everyone who replied. I tried using GSPlayer and it works GREAT! It does pretty much everything else the others do (from what I can tell), it even remembers the last place you left off!

It's free too (it's just not real pretty)!

I too typically have large mp3 files (lectures) on my CF card that I listen to on the tram etc. I've never had a problem but I have always used the Divx player. I have a beta testing 3 gig CF card that works great, and I even have a few of my favorite QAF episodes for when the tram breaks down (again, watching using the Divx player)
