The Ultimate Divx On Axim Thread

Ok Guys,

Here is my idea, there are several different threads on this site discussing coverting a 650Mb movie to divx 150Mb to play on the axim. In every thread I find some useful notes, but it is still not working with me the way it should.

Since there are different threads it's hard to keep up with the findings of fellow Axim users and to see everything clearly, Iw ould like to open this Thread to comprise everything.

A lot of people are having troubles (going from crashing MVP's, to no video but sound ok to returning to desktop).

I would like to consolidate everything in this thread and work together with you guys to create a full up-to-date, fully detailed (if possiblle WITH screens) manual so everyone, oldies and newbies can start encoding movies and enjoying without going through all the hassle I went through for 2 weeks now with minimal succes.

My findings:

- started with divx codec 5.02 + pocket MVP player

films encoded using settings mentioned on this site, either program would block, return to desktop or sound ok and no video

- uninstalled MVP and downloaded one of the earlier pocket divx players, the movie played but I had blocks appearing and disappearing all the length of the movie (due to incompatibility between divx codec 5.02 and the older pocket divx player)

- uninstalled divx codec 5.02, reinstalled divx coden 4.17 and played this in older version of pocket divx player : the movie played well, no blocks but sound + video were not synchronized, I encoded "Fast&Furious" and I heard the engines of the kewl Honda Civics rumbling when people were having a conversation...

PS; The test.avi I downloaded on this site was also encoded with divx codec 5.02 and that played well on the latest pocket MVP player

Guess this all has to do with compatibility between codecs and players and apparently different versions of eg MVP player you can find on different sites, so it would be + to mention the exact url to download the MVP and Virtual Dub ... (those who had succes)

Also the aspect ratio seems to be creating problems, I never did the calculations found on this site, whatever source I have in any format, I always just convert to 320x240. Maybe this could be a problem, I read here you have to check the initial resolution and then make some calculations...

Well needed thread - thanks. My only piece of input on aspect ratios is that if you are encoding a widescreen film (as most DVDs are now) you should used 320 x 180 for the resolution - that will retain the widescreen ration without "stretching" the video.

The Pocket MVP help file is included with the program and is full of great tips and tricks - from the source - the programmers!

There is a good section in there about aspect ratios.

I follow these directions: encode for PPC and have never had any problems. They come out great.

NOTE: I am using VirtualDub version 1.4.13 and DivX 5.0.2.
