Question Is there a way to make my mp3 files smaller?!?!?

I have only a 64 mb storage capacity and mp3 files can take up a good amount of space when you only have that much, is there a way i can make the files smaller to fit more on my ppc?

Use a bitrate converter to change my mp3's from xxx kbps to like 64 or 28kbps ... it will make it a lot smaller than the original size

Sound quality will reduce at the same time.

use it to convert to a number of formats, I would try ogg and play with gsplayer and see if it is acceptable.
Like mentioned, the audio quality drop significantly when you re-encode... experiment a little. try various bit rates to reach the best size/quality for your specific ears.
many ppl's ear can't really tell the difference. and most ppl use pretty awful earphones so you really have to just try it and see if its acceptable.

Wma?

All my digital music is in MP3 format on my desktop (streamed to my X30 over the network... very cool), but when I take it to go, I put it in WMA format using Windows Media Player (copy to device option).

I have the settings set for 64-bit WMA and it cuts the size of my MP3 in half at least (as 128-bit is my lowest quality MP3) and it still sounds great with some earphones on the X30... So until I get my 1GB SD card (soon I hope), my 256MB SD holds about 110-120 songs (depending on the length) in that format (I guess you could divide that in four for your card d3carnage...

My two cents...

IMO, just save up and buy a storage card The 128mb cards out there are going for almost nothing nowadays. That way you enjoy quality .mp3's and not have to spend time shrinking them

And Welcome to Aximsite

depends.
I archive my cd in 320 vbr mp3 . Then I do 90vbr ogg for my axim and I have a 512SD just for mp3.
a 128 fill up fast too, regardless, its best to kind of figure out where your tolerance are because no matter what size of storage you have, it still can be filled. (there are many with 40GB player and still don't have enough room :) )

I'll second that ogg vorbis recommendation. Using ogg vorbis, you can get more milage end up with shorter file sizes at the same quality (or better quality using the same file size)!

And in addition you would also be supporting a good cause since unlike MP3, ogg is a free format for which companies (who make players) do not need to pay any royalties :)

now 1GB is getting cheaper
personally, I wouldn't compromise the audio quality
then I use 160k ogg when encoding from CD
the audio quality's difference is hardly to be heard
when you use it at home, you can use on demand (which gives you full control to play what you want)
if you can use hotspot, setup an FTP server, then copy the files from your home (this is also possible with EDGE/CDMA1x or higher mobile connection)
