Worried Windows Media Player Mystery

I am runing PPC 2002 A04 on my X5 400Mhz Advanced. This includes WMP 8.5 (I Think)

When I tap the WMP Icon the "wait" clock does a couple of revolutions but WMP does not load.

In the Program Files Folder there is a WMP Folder which contains two small 1k files. I have deleted this folder, done a Backup using Sprite Backup and the done a Hard Reset, to restore the Axim to is "as new" state. WMP then runs correctly and the WMP Folder in Program Files is re-created.

If I then restore my backup the problem returns and WMP will not load. I can only assume that there is a Registry entry causing this. I am no Registry expert, but there does not seem to be very much in the Registry about WMP.

Some time ago I downloaded an Upgrade for WMP PPC 2002 from the Microsoft download site. This may have caused the problem. It was listed in "Remove Programs" and I have removed it.This download is no longer listed.

Has anyone any ideas ?

The 'upgrade' was probably WMP 7.5 or some lower version, as that is what MS had on it's websites for a while. You over-wrote 8.5, and then removed the whole thing...and then created a backup with no WMP at all.

The only way you'll get WMP back is to hard-reset but NOT reload your apps from backup.

This isn't a bad thing anyway. All your PIM is backed up in Outlook, and important files will still be in synced "My Documents" file. Reloading all the apps from scratch will give you a nice clean registry, better & faster running (hopefully), and probably some more RAM.

I have done hard-resets every 6 months or so to 'clean things up' from trial software and general abuse of the system.

Chris...

Thank you for your reply but your statement that "the only way to get WMP back is not to load my apps from a backup" is not correct - fortunately !!

I have 49 Programs, 45 games and 25 Utilities loaded. To re-install that lot would have been several days work - simply not worth it just to restore WMP. My Registry is pretty clean anyway, as I regularly clean it using MemMaid, SK Tools, and Pocket Mechanic.

It is indeed a Registry problem and two solutions are given in This Thread - one by me and one by MCastle :approve:

You're quite right, but I try not to tell people to go stomping through their registry. You obviously have a good understanding of registry editing...but most people do not (myself, I know enough to get into trouble so I leave it alone unless absolutely necessary). :)
