WMP 10 mobile

I noticed that the x50 is shipping with the new WMP 10. I was wondering if there is a way to get it for the x30 also? If anybody finds out, please let me know. From what I have seen and read it looks like a real improvement over WMP 9 mobile. Thanks.

" Microsoft also is expected to announce Windows Media Player 10 Mobile for Windows-based cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs). The software turns these devices into portable media players that will work with Media Center PCs, allowing users to take content with them.

Windows Media Player 10 Mobile includes support for Microsoft's new DRM (digital rights management) technology, code-named Janus, which allows subscribers to online music services--services that support the technology--to download music collections to mobile devices. Currently, you may download music only to PCs. The software will ship on many new devices, including some cell phones, some PDAs, and a goodly clutch of popular MP3 players. Existing devices can be upgraded, but users will have to get an upgrade from the device maker, according to Microsoft." PC World: News

Thank God for that... I hate when my digital rights aren't managed for me.

According to microsoft's web page. Currently the x50 is the only pocket pc that supports WMP 10. The dell x30 will offer support based on an upgrade in the future. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DOWNLOAD WMP 10. We have to buy a new machine if we have an x3 or x5. This sucks. I really like the new music services (like virgin's) that allow unlimited downloads for $7 a month, but I can only play them on players that support janus. Which for me is my laptop. I was really hoping for eventual support of Janus for other pocket pcs. Right now I am going to have to buy a dedicated mp3 player if I want to take my music with me anywhere.

Yea, you can get it for the x30's, just not right now, Microsoft said that the x30 version will be available within 60 days. Nothing about an x3 or x5. I don't know about anyone else but I'm upgrading to an x50 real soon.
Apple iPhone 8GB

Have owned:
Dell Axim x30 Mid
Dell Axim x3 300 mhz
Toshiba e310

Hi Cilicon - I can only see this on the MS website : "Note: Windows Media Player 10 Mobile is not available for download from Microsoft, but several devices will offer upgrades."

It doesn't specifically mention the X30 upgrade or 60 days - where did ya hear this from ?

Read the first post in this thread. The statement comes from a news article in PC World magazine. Also read the link in my post to Dell's press release. Scroll down the press release to where it says x30 updates.

The basic idea is, that you now have no choices but to give them more money, or do without. They're counting on the fact that they'll add enough features that you'll give them more money rather than do without

Yeah well as if people are going to shell out $250+ for a media player, even if you do get a shiny new x50 while you're at it. That's nowhere near enough incentive for me.

With the x50 you still need to buy some memory cards to actually put the music on. With $250 on a mp3 player, you have 20 gb or so, with an axim you might be able to find 4 gb of cards for that price (usable at one time, more if you want a bunch of small cards.)

Paul Thurrott wrote a great review of Windows Media 10 Mobile at http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/wmp10_mobile.asp. In it he specifically states that the new Media Player will only be available to new PDA buyers.

Consider the fact that a PPC, including the x50 is not made for the purpose of being a dedicated MP3 player. Media capability is just one of the many nice features built into a PPC. Most people are buying a PPC for the many functions it provides....not just the pim's....not just for game play....not just for word processing....not just for media....etc., but all the above. There are many MP3 players out there with a capacity of no more than 250mb for well over $100.00 and people are buying them like hotcakes. With a 1gb SD card which is well under $100.00 you can fit 4x the songs on the PPC, and with a 2gb CF card for around $100.00 you could fit 8x the songs. Using one or the other still leaves one of the cards dedicated to files and or programs. With wi-fi there is also the ability to stream music from your desktop pc to your ppc from any hotspot over the internet.

So don't forget when you are cutting the PPC short for it's capacity for media storage as compared to a hard drive based MP3 player....you are not comparing apples to apples. The PPC is so much more than just an MP3 player.

Peace,

Rob Bond
