Hi all,
I was trying to figure out how to put a movie on my axim and have it be readable. I was able to put an episode of the simpsons on the Axim, but when i clicked on it, it said i had to open it from a program. The Media player that comes with the axim doesnt seem to be able to open movie files. ( or better put, i cant figure it out...) I also downloaded PictPocket from Digisoft's website. when i opened the movie file with that program, it said that it was an unrecognized type of file. Do i need to conver to a certain file type or what??? I tried all types: MPEG, MPG, AVI, MOV... and none of them worked.
This will play it. I am working on a tutorial on Video as we speak.

I don't believe pocketMVP will play MOV files, you need to convert it.
I have been using EOvideo for this. You can get a free or trial version out there. Then you can convert to avi or mpg, just make sure you follow the conversion/compression recommendations set by http://www.pocketmatrix.com/
Hi there... I think first you need to check what kind of file you are playing... If for example the simpsons there is a high probability that it is in .rm format so you need to download realplayer for pocketpc.... If in .asf u can play it in your regular windows media player... If it's .mpg or mpeg then you can use pockettv (i think)... If it's .avi, depending on how it was encoded (what codecs were used), you can play it in pocketmvp if it's divx encoded... .avi is more like a container depending on what codecs were used to encode then you have to use the appropriate program... some avi files uses xvid, divx, indeo etc... Hope this helps.
Oh! Also, I think .mov is a quicktime file... I'm not sure if you can actually play that in your pocketpc straight off the bat.. You might have to convert it first.
Hi. I use a method of compression that I haven't seen anywhere else. First, you have to compress the video into MPEG format. I do this by using DVD Decrypter to get the VOB file, then DVD2AVI to get the AVI and WAV files. Then I use TMPEG to get the MPEG file. This file is useable on some players such as PocketTV, but it will be about 220 MB for one 23 min. Simpsons episode. And you have to find a different player other than Windows media. My computer has Windows Movie Maker on it, so I use that. I import the MPEG file into it, then save the movie and convert it into WMV format. There are even three settings specifically for PDA's. The end result is a decent quality Simpsons episode at only 37 MB that will play on Windows Media Player for Pocket PC.
This will play it. I am working on a tutorial on Video as we speak.
I'd really like to see your tutorial on videos. How long until it's ready? Many of us newbies need a 101 course on this. Please be detailed so that people like myself can maximize the movie performance on my wonderful dell ppc.
Thanks

I use Movie Maker as well - built in with XP. I've tried a number of utilities and applications to produce the final results, and found that Movie Maker created the best copy, and compacted it the best. I got Mr. Deed's down to 140MB - very clear image.
BTW - I'll use DVD Ripper to extract the VOB files and convert them to MPEG - Then pull the MPEGS into Movie Maker and convert it to avi using the PocketPC settings to disk.
Now it's time to purchase the 1 gb compact flash card. Anyone see any deals? They are floating around $200 right now.

If your final step is WMV why bother with the MPEG phase at all?
You can open the .avi and .wav that DVD2AVI created in Movie Maker and be done with it. MPEG is just going to drop the quality even more, and WMV is already a lossy codec so that's a double hit on quality.

In terms of viewing movies on your PPC, PocketMVP is one tool you could use. You could also use PocketTV. I use pockettv and is works great for me. I have two full length movies and the 1st season DVD of Married with Children on a 1GB CF card. When I am on a trip or get bored, I whip out my movie card and start viewing.
As far as the process to RIP DVDs, there are several threads discussing this and how to achieve it. There are so many different ways to accomplish it. I would suggest searching the threads and choosing what method is best for you since you would know best as to what resources you have. As far as DVD ripping goes, I use a combination of SmartRipper, DVD2AVI and TMPGenc.
Jay-C...could you go thru the steps you use to convert a DVD to use on the AX with Windows Media Player? It sounds like that may be a fairly easy process and perhaps the most "understandable" for a novice. I am beginning to get very frustrated trying to get some video to play on my AX...I am to the point of trying anything.
Also, do you use Media Player 8.5 that came with the AX or do you have PPC2003 and Media player 9? I still have PPC 2002...

Geez...this is getting so frustrating... I have tried just about everything listed in these threads on how to rip a DVD so I can encode it in any fashion and I can't get it done correctly. Either I don't have the right codecs ( can't seem to find the right ones to use with specific programs, or really anyplace to download them), or some other error comes up...
I have yet to try SmartRipper yet...is that a good program to try? And if so, is there an easy step by step to show how to use it? Are the right codecs included....
Sorry about all the questions but this is very frustrating.
