Should this be possible?
I worked for a while selling consumer electronics and I always told customers that wanted to hook their DVD player into a VCR that it wasn't possible due to copy protection. Yet I hooked a Sanyo DVD player into the s-video input of my tuner card and was able to record a commercial DVD (the movie Kate & Leopold) in mpeg2. The quality was outstanding with no copy-protection breakup.
Does anyone know why this (the supposedly impossible) was possible?

I think you misunderstood. I wasn't gloating, just the opposite. Unlike a lot of people on here, I haven't been able to rip a single DVD to my axim yet. I was just wondering if anyone else had tried recording the output of their DVD player.

I don't wanna be a clone!

I didn't set out to copy a DVD. I just wanted to watch the Sanyo DVD player on the computer (long story). I just tried googling "DVD copying" and found out that the picture is only distorted if you copy to a vcr, not to the svideo inputs of your computer. The copy protection needs the AGR (automatic gain control) chip of a vcr to function. So here's an alternative way to copy a Hollywood DVD to your axim. This might appeal to someone who doesn't want to download any "DVD ripper" programs from unknown sources.

I'm just saying that It's clearly not a very good way to do it.
You said "I haven't been able to rip a single DVD to my axim yet"... Well download Smartripper or DVD Decrypter, and do it the easy way.

I don't get it? bradpatton jst shared with us a new way to get DVD's over to your computer and folks are acting like it's sacrelige or something. I'm going to try this when I get home. It would be nice to be able to hook up my DVD player to my computer and have something like WM Recorder do the conversion in realtime. bradpatton -did the movie play in Windows Media Player on your computer and what version of WMP are you using?

I am not sure how yours is working.Have you tried other dvds?
I have done alot of movie transferring and what have you.I have a macrovision descrambler and it uses the rca connector. Therefore when I use svideo I don't have the copy protection disabled and you can clearly see that its not. Not all DVDs have copy protection.Mostly high tech,sci-fi and certain movies.
