Hi all, what is the average FPS I can expect from divx movies on a basic Axim? I've been using Smartripper, Vidomi to make very good quality divx movies. Last night encoded entire Spiderman DVD to fit 225megs because I purchased a 256MB CF card. Video quality is quite good with excellent sound. I'm worried that the Axim won't be able to handle smooth video playback. Is the best that I can expect less than 15fps? Please respond if you watch videos on your Axim since one of my purchase decisions was smooth video playback (greater than 24fps) from 320x240 divx movies.

thanks
Jim

I am just doing a realtime streaming with it. I takes maybe 10 seconds to get started (Caching around 3 megs of the file since I have caching enabled)

Here's a good example of what can be done.
Shuttle Launch Vid

My playback stats w/ PMVP were only 15fps, but no dropped frames.

i encoded a movie w/ two setting: 320x240 via 29.97fps(original) and 160x120 via 12fps.
The first setting: drop frame and big file size.
Second setting: smooth and small file size.

by losing some image quality, the second setting plays much better...also, i can fit 4 movie in my 512MB CF card. With my dell 3400mAH battery(not the original 1440mAH), i can play at least 3 of them. I tested both of the two Dell batteries, you may want to know:

PowerSave mode(200MHz),Brightness on level 3(always on), Sound on level 3(output to speaker), 2h6min of Movie(my second setting).
1440mAH - about 60% power left.
3400mAH - about 80% power left.

Thanks everyone for sharing your Axim video tests! I decided to cancel my basic Axim order since from what I've been reading the Axim is not capable of 24fps+ 320x240 Divx playback without dropping frames. Even the faster 400MHz model is not capable of this. Don't get me wrong - Axim is still an amazing value! I'm going to wait for the next models that will hopefully have ATI's Imageon chipset for smoother video playback. Probably will not have to wait long since Toshiba e740 already utilizes this chip.

1) you will wait for at least 1 year
2) after it will be available you will find that 24fps is too big to store on SD/CF card

(i prefer 15fps with small size NOW)

peteho:

- I can wait another year but Dell will introduce new Axim models six months from now
- Viewing jerky 15fps movies with mediocre audio quality is not my idea of fun
- 24fps 320x240 Divx movies can easily fit on 1GB CF. In fact, I encoded the entire Spiderman DVD (320x240x24fps) and it fit onto 256MB CF.

you seem happy with your Axim and that is all that matters

If u really care about Movie-to-go i believe those Personal Video Player is ur solution. ViewSonic and Intel just come out their demo version a few week ago on CES 2003, i guess u may want that if u are willing to wait for a year, they play movie better then any PDA. Those baby also run on Intel cpu w/ Mepg4 video decoder and a huge hard drive. If u really have some money and want something now, i know just the right thing for u: Sharp AV-1. It is a Mepg4 video + mp3 player w/ about 2inch of screen. The best thing is its size, as small as a MD player!
