Question The definitive DVD conversion to pocket pc

Hi,

I am at a loss to know the best DVD conversion to pocket pc.
I want 640x480 films at around 300-400 mbytes which will play on either WMP 10 or betaplayer.

I understand there are only 4 potential solutions:

1. DVD to pocket PC
(http://www.makayama.com/dvdtopocketpc.html)

2. Pocket PC studio
(http://www.pqdvd.com/watch_dvd_on_pocket_pc.html)

3. Smartmovie
(http://www.lonelycatgames.com/mobile...martmovie.html)

4. freeware/open source route. Maybe something like dvdshrink -> pocketdivxencoder
(www.dvdshrink.org)

does anyone have any experience of the above with the above spec.s (e.g. 640x480) and can recommend a good one ?

thx

I would like to get my movies around the 100 mb to 200 mb range. Are there any recommendations for this?

Pocket DVD Studio

I have had the best experience using Pocket DVD Studio. 640x416 is the best one to choose. There is no option to get 640x480, however you can very very easily adjust the biterate to make the end result whatever size you would like. I usually try to make my DVD's just under 500 MB so 2 can fit on a 1GB card. The conversion process take 7 hrs on my Athlon 700 and 2.5 hrs using my Athlon 2200.

Hope this helps.

P.S. The videos will be turned into Xvid .avis

see my post above, PocketDivXEncoder sends it to .avi (betaplayer) in any size you want, using a slider bar

FYI they just released 2.02 and 640 x 480 is now an option on the drop down.

that guide is pretty cool, thanks fish.
however I am tending towards commerical software, as I used to use the dvd2avi route and it takes much longer then commerical software and requires more packages. Perhaps dvddecrypter and pocket pc studio is the way to go ....

Hey Colonel, I cannot tell you which software is the best but I must let you know that DVD to PocketPC is one of the best out there. I have gotten 7 full length movies on a 1GB card (WMV format that is)with good quality and it made my trips on vacation a pleasure. You can set it and forget it for about 4-5 hours and it will place the finished video on you computer in wmv format for you. I think it is worth every penny and I am good to go with it. "Keepin It REAL!".....

I'm kinda ify on DVD to Pocket PC b/c it's only worked about 75% of the time. For some reason, some DVDs have audio errors in the beginning of the encoding process. No matter whether I reboot or reset DVD to Pocket PC, about 25% of the DVDs don't work. You are right though that when it works, it works well.

It uses the libavcodec mpeg-4 codec as implemented by mencoder (mencoder is used by pocketdivxencoder for the actual encoding process).

Yeah I have had that same issue several times in the beginning as well until I realized that I should have closed some other programs that was running. After shutting everything down short of turning of my computer the DVD to PocketPC runs as designed for me now. I may not have needed to shut so many programs but I wanted to make sure. Try that sometimes, you may not have that audio problem as I did ebelen1.

Can one copy rented DVDs this way, for one time only personal use of course? Or do these programs only work on personally owned DVDs?

I'm looking at PocketGears "DVD to Pocket PC 1.3" -or- "Pocket-DVD Studio NEW! 2.0.2" but I haven't really figured out the difference between them? Anyone have input for this DVD copying idiot?

I just purchased DVD to PPC 3.0 and it has crashed all day. Ad says from DVD to PPC in 45 minutes. Sorry, but it ran for almost 2 hours on 1 machine before it crashed (P4 3.0Ghz w/1GB RAM). On another, it hung immediately. I have asked Handango for a refund.......
