Problem with WMP library
This is my first post in this excellent site, after buying my first PDA (X50v). I am learning a lot with you all.
There is however a small problem that I haven't seen raised by others: In Windows Media Player 10, whenever I go to "Library" and try to select "My Music", or "My Videos" an error message appears saying "An unexpected error occurred". However, if I access the music or video files via the File Explorer or via Library\Menu\Open file... they play without any problem. The music (.wma and .mp3) and video (.wmv) files are stored in the SD card\My documents\Music. I did Update Library... several times. Any ideas why the error message appears ? |
i have the same problem

I also have this problem. It is not resolved but if it saves you some frustration, here's what I have tried & learned:
-Soft reset doesn't help -I tried a hard reset, synced music files, no luck -I can play songs one at a time through file explorer, but they aren't recognized in the Windows Media Library. -Syncing into main memory or built in storage works fine. (Not much room though) -I frequently lose my ActiveSync connection part way through syncing directly to the device or compact flash card through ActiveSync. -Format doesn't make a difference WMA/MP3 tried it both ways. -I've tried adjusting the settings on my desktop Windows Media Player so it will/won't create subfolders on the card. -I started out using Windows Media Player version 9 on my desktop, then upgraded to 10 thinking that was the problem, then did a system restore and went back to version 9. I'm back to version 10 (so I could try ripping in mp3 format, didn't work) -I've tried copying files to both the /music directory and the /My Documents directory. - I had some luck once when I switched compact flash cards and discovered I could sync music files using Windows Media Player directly to the compact flash card (via the pcmcia slot on my laptop). I had a playlist and cover art, it worked great one time only. I switched to a larger card thinking I had it figured out but it didn't work with the larger (512 meg) card. I figured I'd be happy for a while with a handful of songs on my 32 meg card and put it back in and it didn't work anymore. No library, no cover art when playing through file explorer. (But it works fine in my Ipaq using Windows media version 8.) -When I tell the library to search for songs, it tells me it found 9 songs (that was correct) but they don't show up in the library. -I tried the trial version of Pocket Music and couldn't get it to recognize the WMA files, although it is supposed to be able to. -I only have tried compact flash cards, I thought about going and buying a SD card, but I see you've been down that road. Finally I called Dell Tech Support yesterday and was told they were going to research it and get back to me. I called back again this morning and was told it was a known issue with some units. They are sending me a new one. I was told it doesn't happen with all of the X50v units and if it happens with the new one, the only solution they had was to wait for a ROM upgrade. Good Luck, JM Quote:

Sorry to be short guys but, just don't use WMP10. It's not even worth it. BetaPlayer for video/GSPlayer for streaming and mp3 audio.
Problem solved. |
Sounds good, where do you get it?

I received the replacement from Dell and it has the same problem. The new one also is having problems with WLan, so I'm going to send the new one back. Funny though, they didn't send return instructions.....I'll have to call again.
I found GSPlayer. It doesn't seem to play Windows Media files, none of my music is MP3. It works but I'll have to re-rip everything. JM |
Thanks for the help.
Although I am not a technical guy (I'm just a lawyer), I find the explanation given by the DELL support a bit odd. I forgot to mention in my first post that the first times I tried WMP, the "library" worked. It only went wrong a few days later. This is why I tend to think that the problem is not with the machine. Anyway, it is not a big deal, compared with all the fun I am having with this great machine. I already have Betaplayer and I will search for GSPlayer. Quote:

that sucks for u guys...my wmp 9 works great...I even like it over gs player

I just started having the same error today. Has anyone solved this one?
Could it be the Libray is corupted? I've had to delete my WMP libray on my laptop before. Does anyone know how to reset (delete) the WMP libray on the Pocket PC? |
I have found the problem. On the CF Card (or SD card) or whatever card you are getting the error on, there are 2 hidden folders and 1 hidden file that Media Library creates. Delete this file and the 2 folders, reset and it will work again. The file name is WMPInfo.xml, and the folder names are MSMETADATA and WMDRM. Worked for me...Hope it works for you guys too.

Thanks for the hint davemann. :approve:
I have no clue about the purpose of these folders, however I tried to erase one at the time. After erasing the one called MSMETADATA the problem was solved. This may mean that the one called WMDRM (I suppose it has something to do with Digital Rights Management) is not to blame for the problem. |
Hi,
This is the complete solution to get this going.. Quit Media Player on the PC and the PPC. On the PC use Windows Explorer to look for a hidden directory on the SD Card called MSMETADATA and delete it. Do a soft reset of the Axim. Go back into Media Player on the PC and resync your playlist, it will start copying again. If the tracks you were synching before the error appeared don't show up in your library list on the PPC, click on Menu, Update Library... and Search and this should correct the library file. Four hours I spent on this yesterday before I found this thread... I'm going to raise this with Microsoft.. |
Thanks for this discussion... I just started having a problem this morning where WMP wouldn't let me choose "SD Card" from Library... I deleted those two folders on the card, soft rest, and now it's fine :approve:

Thanks for this, it was starting to drive me mad. Deleted those 2 folders and my media files are all back, brilliant. :)

Thanks
I've been having EXACTLY this issue with my X30 PAN/LAN, which otherwise has been performing like a champ; I'll try this solution tonight - the (music-less) drive to work today was a wee bit annoying... :D
edit: Yep, worked great; you can actually do the deletion directly on the Axim. Open File Explorer, navigate to your SD card, and on a blank area of screen, hold down the stylus. Choose "view all files" from the context menu. You'll then see the hidden files as well, and can delete MSMETADATA. Open media player, and update the library. Voila, no more error. |
