Yes it is! It's the actual size too, not a few mb off or anything, more like a few kb! That's wicked! No fooling around with bitrates, resolutions and quality settings anymore. This does it all for you. The only drawback I can think of is that it takes so long :/
I've decided (after some trial and error) that I'm very happy when I set the audio to 80kps and at a file size of 250MB. The program is fool proof...every movie rips to the same size on this setting. VERY NICE.
What resolution did you choose Choirguy? I get 2 or 3 options.
If you want more options uncheck the box that says the ones that FairUse reccomends (forget the exact wording) And you should get all the ones availible to you :)
Ok so someone here mentioned VGA movie or something around those lines. Does this program work only with X50 line or VGA PDA's? I thinking yes but i would like to make sure. LMK

No, you have the choice of a variety of resolutions. :approve:
Ok so I have a Axim X30 high. Maybe I'm just confused about this whole VGA thing, so I can use this program with my PDA, just that I can't pass the stock resolution of 320x240 correct? Plz help me sort this out? thx
Okay, I've downloaded FairUse, but it doesn't seem to go with my work flow. It wanted to encode the movie from either a real disc or an ISO image. I prefer to rip the movies using DVDdecrypter then use DVDshrink to fit them on a DVD-5. I was using decrypter, setting it to not split the vob files, then using Windows Media Encoder to encode to WMV from the VOB file (using a codec from CleanerXL so that WME could take VOB files as input). Then I would use DVDshrink to burn it onto a DVD-5.
Using FairUse it looks like I will have to rip it once using Shrink for a disc, and then a second time for PPC. Is this what everyone else is doing?
I suppose I could rip an ISO using decrypter, use that ISO for FairUse, and then use DaemonTools to mount the ISO and re-encode using shrink. Maybe I will give that a try tomorrow. If someone who has done this a few times could post their work flow I would greatly appreciate it. I just want to get a good backup and a version for PPC in the shortest amount of time.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, since FairUse says it won't encode copy protected DVD's you'll need to use AnyDVD to get around CSS. Is that what everyone else uses?
Okay, I tried this program on The Alamo Wides Screen last night, and I must say the quality is amazing. 2 Hour 12 minute movie reduced to 506 MB. The only problem I have with it is that it preserved the black bars at the bottom and top of the screen. I was hoping there would be a way to apply a mask to it similar to Pocket DVD Studio so that the picture would take up the whole screen. Is there no way to do this with this program?
Thanks,
Dr. Gonzo
P.S. Do most of you usually just rip using shrink first to make your movies fit onto a DVD-R and then use Fair Use to encode from your burned disc? I would think re-encoding the video twice would reduce the quality some.
JoeQFlyer,
(on the forums page): It can be found near the bottom of the forums list and is entitled "FairUse official forums" There's a news, support, & a bug report section.

Are we talking FairUse LE? In that case, I didn't choose any resolution. I'm not messing around in the "OPTIONS" area at all, which is why I love this so much.
I simply reduce the size of the movie to 250MB, set the audio at 80, and then click the "automatic" function (can't check on that at the moment, as I'm ripping my 14th movie in two days.
My PC is fast enough that I can set FairUse to work and then go do something else. BOY am I happy that I upgraded...I was using a 1.4 GHz Celeron before. (Now it's a fire breathing Dell 8400 3.2 GHz machine with 1 GB of 533 memory)

I only rip them once, into a 250 MB file. I don't need to burn actual copies of my DVD for any reason (I still don't see my PC as a replacement for my home stereo system), but I am making movie files for my PPC so that I can watch movies as I travel.

I think that BetaPlayer is smart enough to take a movie in AVI format and play it in the screen that is presented on the PPC.
That way, you could rip to almost any screen size, but BetaPlayer would still play it.
I would guess that the other players work the same way, as would MP10 if it actually played avi files.
I ripped Hulk last night... the only settings I changed were size of file, size of screen and I also selected the first choice on the final screen before it makes the .avi .. somthing about the frames or somthing. Do yunz do that? It works great using beta player on my X30.
I also have a quick question about size... whats the difference if I select 470meg as opposed to 870meg. Is the bigger one better quality? Just wondering...
THANKS
Paul G
