But, I read an article about the latest version 2.2 of NERO Recode at http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/New...px?NewsId=11764

Tried it and bought it immediately!!!!

It has profiles for "Portable" devices where it automatically limits the size of the movie to 352x144 maximum.

I've just done 2 movies which were about 2hrs long and it took 40mins for each - add another 10mins on if you do 2-pass - the quality is amazing, and no sound sync problems either!

Really easy, you tick "Fit to Target" and then just enter something like 250mb as max file size and away it goes :)

I admit I've not tried FairUse having only just heard about it - can any compare it with Nero Recode?

Fedorov.
what format does it use?? does it use XviD, DivX, or some other format??

I also use Nero Recode. It produces an .mp4 file (nero digital). It can also retain chapters subtitles and multiple audio tracks, the first two of which I believe I read picard was working on for future betaplayer releases. Be sure not to use the -avc profile as this isn't supported.

non-DVD source?

I have a bunch of *.mpg files from a TV capture card, about 1 to 4 gig each. Does anyone have suggestions for a tool to recode these to a format suitable for BetaPlayer?

PDE always produces AVIs that playback jerky on my X30. Coughed up for DrDiVx, smooth playback now.

I have the mpg's from (ATI capture/tuner) and I use pocketdivx encoder to size them for my x50v -- works great1 Just set your capture card to capture at whatever size you want final output movie to be -- saves some effort, I go with 480 x 640 and control the output size down to between 300mb to 500mb for a ypical 2 hour program/ movie.

And then plays great with betaplayer -- don't know why anyone would use anything else!

I have the movies set for a 500-600 mb filesize, but sadly the movie won't play smoothly in Betaplayer with the processor @ Power Save (208). It SLIGHTLY freezes during some scenes, yet BP claims there were no dropped frames.

The lowest I can get it to run perfectly is with a speed of 400 Mhz.... I'm too much of a perfectionist to let this go.

Echo... echo... echo...

I have an X30 (312MHz) version and I was looking into Fair use. I really don't have too much use to have dvds on my axim acept to brag, HEHE. But I tried files at 700MB (Default) and they get choppy. So the Bottom line is is he X30 Mid powerful anough to do a movie via fairuse/betaplayer if the settings are right. If not no biggie I was just wondering. I don't really want to buy an X50v because I am looking into a tablet pc, so I will probably stick to my x30 mid for now.

Thanks!!

Yea, Once I encoded the movies to a smaller file size like 350MB instead of 700MB it played very smooth even on the X30 MID. Fair Use and Beteplayer is awesome!

I used the dvd shrink and pocketdivxencoder process desribed elsewhere in this and another thread. I've run into two problems: 1. I couldn't determine which was the correct audio file, so I ended up encoding the wrong one multiple times (director's comments instead of the actual track for the movie). 2. When attempting to play the video using betaplayer (it looks fantastic), I'm unable to pause the movie and start it again from the same place. My player indicates that the file is not "interleaved." Anyone have any suggestions?

Usually I'd recommend VirtualDub for this task but it's actually far more than you need to fix the problem. Grab a copy of AVI-Mux GUI and load your video into it (drag&drop it into the top window and click the big button labelled generate data source from files) tick your audio stream and click start. The file that it outputs should seek/pause just fine, the problem you had was in the AVI file layout instead of storing the audio and video interleaved together your file had the video first then the audio after it. This is caused by either user error or an encoding application that uses a very old AVI writing technique, I'll leave it to you to figure out which it is.

Unfortunately I haven't used DVD Shrink for a long time but it sounds like the audio tracks are labelled incorrectly or inadequately on the original DVD, you'll most likely find that it's a one-off situation and that other DVDs will rip/encode correctly.

I have had great sucess with using Dvd Decrypter, then DVD2One, and finally PocketDivxEncoder to encode my movies at 640x480 to view a high quality movie on my X50v.

I'm working with an X30 (i.e. VGA), and I'm not sure what speed the processor is at while I'm watching, but the video is the best I've seen on my PPC as I've attempted to decode them. The quality is even quite good on my Desktop...if viewed small enough (i.e. like a PPC screen).
I find that betapplayer will playback video smoothly at 208Mhz on my X30 if I encode the video to a res of 320x240 (for 4:3 aspect Ratio)and 320x176 (for 16:9 aspect ratio). However I use Dr DiVx and Fairuse, never could get a decent encode with PocketDiVxEncoder.
