Welcome to the site Operator. Visit the Introduction form to instroduce yourself.
I use SmartRipper to, well, rip the DVD. PocketDivxEncoder to encode to avi format. Then PocketMVP to play them on the axim.
It is sometimes best to skimp a little on the sound to get more video quality. Besides, the Axim isn't exactly capable of THX quaility. :)

To encode video for the Axim, PocketDivxEncoder is the best, in my opinion.

Actually FairUse is an all-in-one tool. It will rip to your HD and then encode to a file size specified by the user in either Xvid or DivX. There is a free version or a lifetime full version download option for $10 euros.

Rip with dvdshrink, encode with pocketdivxencoder and watch with betaplayer. My current encoding method is to encode with Nero digital (not a free program like pocketdivxencoder). The mp4 files generated by Nero are fantastic when viewed with betaplayer. No sync issues, no weird color issues.

Haven't tried Fairuse yet but have read many good things about the program. I use either DVD to Pocket PC or Smartripper and Dr. Divx. DVD to Pocket PC works well if you want to play your movies with WMP. Only drawback is it takes 5 hours and the program costs $30. Smartripper to rip the DVD files and Dr. Divx to encode works great and Dr. Divx allows you to batch encode so you can string a bunch of movies and convert them overnight. Drawback is Dr. Divx is $30 and movies that are about 400 mb and greater look great but under 400 mb looks a little pixelated.

HIGHLY recommend Auto Gordian Knot, fast conversions, choice of Divx or Xvid, allows you to specify the size of the file you need as well as resolution and subtitles... and its free, so easy to use, i'm not sure if any other program is even close to being as good as this :)

I am in the same boat as you and i too am checking out the various software setups. When you look at a time is money factor and think how long it takes to configure and maintain stability w/3 programs vs the one if found www.makayama.com as a 1 step process and makes a file that plays to windows media 10(default player on axim). Still, many stand behind the fairuse program. Seems its sorta preference.

Has anybody had issues with movies created for VGA mode being scrambeled if you pause the movie then power off. When I come back later and try to restart the movie it is NOT viewable. If I do the same thing with a movie created for QVGA mode it works just fine?

I would suggest FairUse to rip&encode to xvid format.
Betaplayer 0.095 to playback your files on the x50.
