mp3 compression

Is there any way to compress my mp3's so they are smaller when I send them to my Axim? And if so, what is the best software?

an mp3 is about as compressed as you can get, ppl dont realize that an mp3 is just a super compressed file, what you can do is rerecord it with a lower sound quality, then it might not sound quite as good but it will be smaller.

To add to that, one might also consider switching to .WMA format, as I have done, since it seems to be more efficient. I converted my MP3s to .WMA format at 48 kbps, which is quite good for listening on the go using the Axim. in doing so I managed to get a 4+ MB song down to just over 1 MB. Some are even smaller, depending on the run time.

I would have to agree with wmoses. I use Musicmatch Jukebox to manage my digital music. I can record MP3 at 128, 96, or 64 kbps. (Remember that the higher the number, the better the quality, and the larger the file size. A song recorded at 64 kbps will be about half the file size of the same song recorded at 128 kbps, but the quality will be less.) I can record WMA at 64, 48, or 32 kbps. The same song recorded as MP3/64 kbps versus WMA/64 kbps will have nearly identical file size. However, the WMA will sound better, for technical reasons that are beyond me. If I was recording to play across my home system, I would want to record as MP3/128 kbps because I have a high quality home sound system that can translate that higher quality recording to a quality sound for my ears. However, I have learned that a high recording level is not needed for my Axim. Any handheld player and headphones system can only go so far to translate higher recording quality and an acceptable trade-off is a lower recording quality that saves file space.

Bottom line-record your music as WMA at either 64 kbps (my choice) or 48 kbps (wmoses' choice) and you can fit more music in the same space. But don't take my word for it- experiment

are there any good programs out there for converting mp3's to different quality? most of my mp3s are at 192 on my computer, and i think converting to 112 would be a good fit...or do u guys think 96 would be good enough? i definitely think even 128 isnt necessary to get good quality sound from the axim.

i tryed 48 kbps with wma format and i hated it, it sounds terrible. im just gonna stick with 128 kbps with mp3, besides i have a 512 cf card so i dont have to worry about it. i recommend 96 kbps or 80 kbps with ogg or mp3 if u are of those people that only have a 128 mb memory card

Try converting to 80 kbps in ogg format. I converted all my files to ogg for listening on my Axim...it still sounds great at nearly half the size of my original MP3s...haven't experimented with lower kbps.

I use a program called dbPower Amp Music converter. Which does a great job of converting to ogg files.

You can rip a CD directly into wma using windows media player, or else I have a program called Advanced WMA Workshop that easily does it.

a good link for mp3 converstion from MiniM3

I am in the process of making a copy of all my mp3's over to oog for the axim. They are half the size of the orginal and not really much noticable difference in quality. I am trying to make the most of my 128mb cf card that was a back up for my digi camera. Still deciding on whether to get an ipod for music or a 1 gig cf card.

The winamp player clone that can be found in the link acts just like winamp and can also use winamp skins.

is there any way to convert microsofts gay format from 196 kbps to 96 kbps... i did the moronic thing of protecting content!! i can play it on my mp3 player though...

I'd much rather not do the time consuming: burn it to cd, copy from cd, burn to cd, copy from cd, burn, copy, burn, rinse and repeat....

PS: musicmatch doesn't even recognize the stupid wma files.. even with the plug-in i can't convert em.
