questions about downloading movies

Can anybody tell me what the best software is to download dvd's to my ppc? I don't think I want to go the free route since I'm looking for the easiest and most painless. I've been thinking about either DVD-Studio or DVD to PocketPC. Has anybody had experience with these? I was also wondering how long each one takes to convert and then download to pda. DVD-Studio claims to be 300% faster then any other product. Another question was do I need to have a dvd drive? I have one on my laptop but not on my pc. Thanks in advance.

I have had excellent results with DVD to Pocket PC. So far I have encoded several of my DVD's including Clerks, I-Robot, Harold and Kimar, Several of my South Park episodes and even some Spongebob for my youngest son (Great for trips on the Axim or a notebook).

I was able to squeeze I-Robot (1hr 57mins), into a 233mb file with great video and good sound. I was impressed with the results I recieved. The only glitch I have had is that some DVD's wont work with it (I am assuming this is some soft of copy protection).

As a side note, I was watching Screensavers (God forbid) the otehr night and they said that encoding DVD's to your pocket pc was technically illegal because you have to alter the media to make it work on the pocket pc. I would like to state for the record that if I pay good money for something (DVD, software, whatever) I will do as I please with it. As long as I am not sharing it with others or making money from it the entertainment industry can pucker up.

Cheers.

P.S. As a side note, it took about 2 hours and 45 minutes to encode I-Robot which was a 2 hour film.

Pocket-DVD studio plus beta player on your handheld. Simple and easy and now I just noticed version 3 can convert video files. :) :) :)

I was leanng towards DVD-studio as my favorite before- but now with the new features in version 3 I'm way too happy.

Now I can record tv with my Haupauge video card and convert the file to play on my PPC with DVD-studio. I only watch a few shows from TV and they are always on at the wrong time for me... now I set my work pc to record the shows and convert them on the fly for viewing later on my PPC..... :approve:
