DivX Encoder help!

So I used DVD Shrink first, then I'm trying to encode that file to fit on my ppc. I used this method with another movie and it worked fine, but now I'm having trouble. The estimated file size DivX Encoder gave me after I had all my settings done was 201mb.. but the file came out to 499mb!! Any idea whats wrong? Thanks.

Don't trust the estimated file size.

Is the prorgam you are using PocketDivxEncoder? Try setting the audio to setting 5, the video to 12, and sound at 100%.

what i use is fairuse wizard which rips it straight from dvd to divx or xvid which will make a 700 mb file then i use pocket divx to make it smaller worked perfect everytime i did it. i do it this way so i have to make one file and only code each once that way i have one for the desktop and one for ppc. now if you don't want small and large file fairuse wizard u can customize to make the file smaller to rip directly down to 200mb for example. only draw back to fairuse it take about to hours to rip then 2 hours to encode this is another reason i always just make one big file fist then use pocket divx encoder to make it smaller. just type in fairuse wizard.. the 2 programs are awesome when use together like described above

fairuse is free as along us make the file 700mb or smaller.. i think if you buy it will allow for larger files but for what we use it for u dont need to buy it. for files larger then then we can leave them as dvd format. but it is free to use.. i love been coding alot of movies this way... oh another tip if dont have reader they sell sd mobile card reader/righter thats the size of thumbdrize for a keychain that moves movies really fast i moved 200mb move in less then 30 seconds with the sd reader called mobilemate by sandisk it was cheap like 20 bucks at bestbuy

Why use PocketDivxEncoder if you are using Fairuse?

It can encode it to smaller file sizes and still keep the same screen size. Just tell it the max file size you want. I have been doing it with all the movies I encode.

Yep there was another thread with this same problem. It was never really resolved.

DVDx 2.3 is what I use for ripping and compression (one step process) and usally to Xvid. If I use PocketDivXEncoder afterwards to compress it for PDA use it generally is fairly accurate. Possible it has something to do with the codec? Possible try re-installing your codecs after installing PocketDivXEncoder???? sounds stupid but maybe the links are wrong and it is using it's own encoder or something? DVDx is bang on the money every time and it is free and has heaps of options for resizing etc. Maybe it is best just to use it?

Just my thoughts...

Cheers
Adrian

Yep I did see that. This is what I meant -> I use DVDx to get one for the PC and then use the created file with PocketDivXEncoder for the PDA and the file size is fairly accurate.

Cheers

i see, oh ok i see what you meant. i just use fair use cuz it codes from dvd directly to divx.. i didn;t know dvdx could do that.. i always thought dvdx copys to vob for files to burn to disk like with a dvd burner.. if it does also do dvd to divx 700mb size files i will try that instead

yep I really like it but it took me some work to get the optimal settings. If you know what your doing and have used other programs it will probably not be a problem for you.

Good luck!!

I tried using FairUse, but I got an error about the codec, and it wouldn't do anything.. I think this was in another thread somewhere as well..

I realise that you may not want to try another program, but with Auto Gordian Knot, it doesn't estimate file size so you may find it helpful making specific file sizes. It can also be made to use the Xvid or Divx 5 codec (To change this go to the 'Advanced Options' button) so you can some preference there as well.

Here is a little tutorial I wrote up for it. It says that it is for movies on the X50v but it also works on 320x240 screens;)
