FairUse LE and video lag

Based on the various threads recommending FairUse for video encoding I thought I would give it a try. I used the LE version essentially in auto mode. I used FU to encode Mystery Men to 250kb with 128 bit mp3 audio and Midway to 300 mb and 128 bit mp3 audio. In both instances the video looks great, but there was a lag behind audio which progressed over the course of the movie in Betaplayer unstable. When I played the AVI files in WMP on my computer the audio and video are still out of sync. Last night I tried it again with That Thing You Do, but used Ogg format for the audio at 128 bit. Both video and audio are in synch in Betaplayer. Has anyone else had trouble with mp3 audio out of sync with video?

I haven't but I do do have "Mystery Men" so I'll encode it and see. I go for the full 700MB rip though, I've got tons of memory.

I did the rip to 700MB with 96 bit MP3 audio and after ten minutes no sound lag. Is there a specific point in "Mystery Men" when that happened to you? I'm using BetaPlayer Stable 0.5 BTW, and the file is on an SD card.

The lag started almost immediately. I wonder if the smaller file size makes a difference. I used FU LE again with Midway using ogg for audio, 300kb, 96bit audio in full auto mode. Again, great video, but it lagged behind audio almost immediately.

I don't have Mystery Men, but I encode all of my movies to around 230MB and have not experienced any lag.

Question, are you running any processor hogging apps in the background when you are encoding?

I close everything but my browser when I am encoding so it gets done faster. I even close SETI as it is a big processor hog.

I was reading that article about the first Feature Film shot specifically for handheld devices and that was some of the encoding advice the producer/director gave. I'll have the link in a few... The Link, The good stuff is at the bottom.

Good article :approve:

Some nice points at the bottom. I found after my first few movies that I had fewer issues when I ran less while encoding. The nice side benefit is it finishes faster. Though I still have it do most of the encoding while I am sleeping. Set it up and go to bed. :)

I've given up on FU LE. I tried DVD decrypter and Auto Gordian Knot and that process has been flawless. That combination was able to encode to .avi the 2 movies I used with FU LE without any sync problems in audio and video.

Somebody please give us a reference chart for FU settings to use (not just how to use it. IE: Settings for 256 card, 512, etc...

I have the same problem with Fairuse. I've ripped 2 DVD's and have had both go out of synch immediately.

Settings are pretty subjective. Some people would rather sacrifice audio to have better video, and some people are just the opposite. Here are some settings to start with. In addition, I have a step-by-step process posted on 1SRC here.

For the settings below, I am assuming the memory card is blank. In addition, I only plan to adjust the audio bit rate and file size as noted in my artice on 1SRC. Thus, you will want to pay attention to the video bit rate that we recalculate when you adjust the audio bit rate and the file size. You can leave the screen size alone since Betaplayer scales the video very well.

256 MB Card
Length of Movie: 2 hours or less
Audio Bit Rate: 96 kbps
File Size: 242 MB

Length of Movie: 2 hours or more
Audio Bit Rate: 64 kbps
File Size: 242 MB

On any movie on a 256 MB card, video bit rates of 250kbps to 400 kbps are acceptable. If you are converting a lot that are closer to 200 kbps, you might try taking the audio bit rate down to 48 kbps. Other options including living with a 200 kbps video bit rate or getting a larger memory card.

512 MB Card
Length of Movie: 2 hours or less
Audio Bit Rate: 96 kbps
File Size: 484 MB

Length of Movie: 2 hours or more
Audio Bit Rate: 64 kbps
File Size: 484 MB

On movies 1 hour and 30 minutes or less, I suggest adjusting the file size until the video bit rate at top of screen comes down to around 600 kbps. Anything over 600 kbps is pretty much overkill in my opinion. However, the X50v can handle video bit rates up to 1500 kbps.

1 GB Card or Greater
Anyway greater than the settings for a 512 MB card are overkill in my opinion. However, you can get better quality video. It just depends on the device you have and what it can handle. The settings for the 256 MB are a good starting point even if you have a larger capacity card. For one, you can get more movies on a larger card. Two, if you are happy with the settings for the 256 MB card, why waste the memory on something more.

Personally, I use the settings for the 512 MB card. I am a little more particular, and I have the neeed memory.

I hope this helps.

Best regards,
Lance

I am not sure why you are having problems. All 50+ conversions have been flawless. Just a shot in the dark, but you might try installing the actual XviD codec.

Download XviD Codec

Take care,
Lance

I agree w/ Lance...I done many DVDs direct to OGM files with my trusty Dell laptop & Fair Use LE. I use the DivX codec and shoot the results to a 4x 1GB CF card... and use BetaPlayer 0.96. I started ripping to 400MB (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azcaban) then went to 300MB (LXG). NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.
But I'm using an x50v... when I try to do the same stuff with the x30H I have I get the "out of sync" thing. Oh well, I didn't buy the x30H for video anyway... or BT/WiFi to Skype...
