Each person has his own way of handling things. For some, this seems the easiest way, while people may prefer Pocket DivX Encoder, Fair Use, or Nero ReEncode, or the classic VirtualDub way.

I personally think VirtualDub is probably the hardest, just because it requires changing variables and it's done in a way that isn't too visible and a little more challenging for a normal PC user. That's why this thread is a sticky, however, I've used VirtualDub when we first started converting to PPC (I was in the 10th grade then) and it worked great for me.

It's for the more advanced user I'd say, but greatest thing about VirtualDub is you get a lot more control of certain features with the program, it's more thorough, whatever floats your boat I guess you can say...

Okay, just to mention, this had been about in this thread for a little while: As for Dual-Core Processors, here are their prices

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ = $1,001 each
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ = $803 each
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ = $581 each
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ = $537 each

http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NzY2

It will allow you to do well in re-encoding video, but prices are pretty steep

even if the new cpu's are to rich for your blood remember that when dual core does come out the other cpu's will likely drop in price.
Intel has always had the advantage when it comes to video encoding for some reason. Looks like Intel's dual core will again do better encoding Divx.
If your brave try building a system to overclock. My P4 2.4Ghz is clocked at 2.8Ghz. So the bus and memory is overclocked as well. It benchmarks with scores that non overclocked 3.0Ghz systems get. Hardcore gamers have been overclocking for years. There are many sites devoted to it. Search and have a look.

Yeah, as for now, I'm thinking of just getting a Socket 939 for an AMD processor, because the 939 socket can handle the AMD dual-core's if I ever decide to buy one later on. I'd have to get a new board for an Intel Dual-Core, which benchmark wise, aren't doing nearly as good as AMD. However, I just bought a new guitar, so I kind of cut into my computer money, so I'll have to wait a couple of months until I can buy anyways. Hmm.... I just don't know when the new Intel motherboards will come out

Hi, I recently recieved my new x50 mid(520mhz).

I used this method to encode a dvd, and it worked perfectly on my computer.

But wheni tried it on my pocket pc, everything was good except for the fact that he audio was out of snyc, which was a huge pain in the a**. When played on my comp the issue did not exist.

Does any body have any ideas as to why this would happen?

I use pocketmvp to play because i cant find betaplayer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

After encoding another movie(larger one 400 mb) im getting an error along the lines of "Failed to load file, Please check available memory"

Slow Encoding

I have a dual processor PC with 2x3.2 Intel Xeon P4, 2x10,000RPM SCSI Disk 1GB Ram, but encoding a DVD still take about 1:50hours, only about 25% of the system recources get used.

Anyone know how I can improve the encoding speed ??

Should the processors max out?

What result are other people getting?

Well, it depends on the program, some programs (well, haven't messed with AutoGK enough, but it allows you to set the load on the processor. Just put the encoding on a high priority setting. It should max out your processor.

P.S.Very awesome system!!! I'm going to purchase a 3.0GHz 830 Pentium D with an ASUS P5WD2 motherboard that allows for DDR2-800, so I'm looking forward to encoding DVD's, I mean if you do an hour and 50 minutes on 25% system performance, you might be able to bring it down to an hour using your full processor!! That's a lot better than my Athlon XP 1600+ (nothing against Athlon, great processor)

Great Tutorial!!!

Is it ok to translate it to dutch for the dutch readers?

I'm still waiting on my axim x50 which I ordered last week but I have encoded a movie already... Took some time on my laptop (P4 2.8 - 256MB - 5400RPM 20GB HDD) but the results are ok.

Only one thing I don't know if it's right (and I didn't have the opportunity to test because the axim isn't delivered yet):

The audio encoder says this:
Encoding as 48 kHz 64 kbps single-ch MPEG-1 Layer III (12x) qval=2

Single channel is right because I chose for mono sound, but 48000 kHz? I thought the axim couldn't handle rates above 44100 kHz?

Heart

Just watched some minutes of the encoded movie (Bad Boys II) and it looks awesome! In some action scenes you can see some block-artifacts but I was expecting that for a movie of 2:20 and a size of only 250MB!! (320x240 mono). It took 3:10 to encode on my P4 2.8 / 256MB / 20gb@5400rpm

This is a cheaper solution for car entertainment than mobile dvd-players!

I  my Axim

Feel free to translate it into dutch, but please give credit to me for writing it, and a link to this, the original post, and if you could please host the pics yourself, because I have ran out of bandwidth every month since i created it.

Glad to hear it worked, and im not sure about the Axims Frequency ratings, although I would imagine that the 44100 kHz is just for the onboard speaker, and that the output to the headphone jack could handle the enitre 48000 kHz.

Sure I will give credit to you :). I have my own domain and server so I will post the pictures there. Maybe I can just translate it and post it here?

Great tutorial, busy coding a few episodes of ER to watch on the plane on tuesday. Almost didnt go with the AGKnot due to the warning about accessing the internet, but mcafee put a stop to that :)

Thanks for taking the time to write this

Found a problem with AGKnot, don't know if others have seen this too. If I try to encode a movie which contains multiple angles, AGKnot hangs after the first step.

Does anyone know how to solve this? I don't know how to leave the optional angles out with DVD Decrypter (if it's even possible).

All other movies are coded ok :)! Doing my whole DVD collection now for the summer vacation!

Outstanding tutorial, Bradish !! I've encoded over a dozen movies so far using your suggested 450 meg per, and they've all turned out beautifully. One question, though (if this has been answered elsewhere in this thread, I apologize...). In order to get the forced subtitles in Kill Bill 1 for example, do I select 'English / Normal' under subtitles, then check 'Display Only Forced' in Advanced Options? Thanks!
