good guide! I spent quite a lot of time experimenting with the video converting as well. I have not found yet any software, paid or free, which does both the decoding (ripping) and converting in one go. Well, I did have one program doing all these at once but the video was pausing every 2-3 seconds for a split of a second.

I believe I solved my own problem. I used Picard's back up site. The entire process works wonderful. My compliments to you on a very thought out and well described process.:)

AutoGordianKnot is now up to version 2.40 which is different only in the fact that you select the actual file instead of the directory to pull the DVD information from. Just thought I would post this so you could update if you wanted.
The guide worked great the first time, took me about an hour to an hour and a half to go from Mother Jugs & Speed in the CD drive to having it on my PDA.

Worked pretty good...I converted a 4GB movie (Knights Tale) down to 265MB...seemed to work well, but took 4 hours 48 minutes to complete...I had another program that would convert automatically Large Movies like Gladiator down to 265MB so I tried it with Gknot and it seemed to work well. 475mb just seemed too large and take up too much space on my SD Cards.

I usu Pocket DVD studio which does the ripping and converting all at once. Generally a 2hr. movie takes 40min for ripping and converting process and 1min. to copy to mem. card. I convert all my video to Divx (avi) for my x50v and the movies look great. After ripped and concerted I use a card reader to transfer to mem. card and install to Axim.

The last movie I ripped using Auto GKnot took about 8 hours or a little over. That's just too long IMO
I've been trying out all the freeware programs and found Sompy to be the easiest, quickest and smallest file output size.
I just ripped the godfather ( a 3 hour movie) using DVD Encrypter (as suggested in the first post of this thread) which took about 25 minutes...then ripped it down with Sompy. It took 1 hour and 9 minutes and the final video is only 286MB.
Field of Dreams took 31 minutes and was 171MB.
Plays on TCMP very well. Sompy (recommended to me by Clegs) is a real basic program. It also has the ability to put up to 9 movies in que. You can just click make and then go....however because most videos have the same filename, you need to change the .VOB filenames beforehand otherwise it will only encode one movie.
The status bars don't work very well but the program is running even though they don't show.

HELP! Newbie trying to work with avi files
I followed the tutuorial that Bradish has and converted the movie 300 to an avi format, although windows calls it a Video Clip. I then transfered the AVI to my SD card on my X51 Axim. I then opened up the library on the SD card and I recieved this error message.
'an object or name was not found'
Can anyone help me out and tell me what I am doing wrong?
Thanks,
Darian

I guess I will post here and hope that some one replies. I have been using this method of coversion for a year now. Very simple and easy. I have watched about 20 movies thus far. Never had a problem until now.
I download and coverted the GodFather and another documentary. I never paid attention to the length of both films. Anyway, once i got it to my device, it played real choppy. The video wasnt moving with the audio. I was seeing squares on certain sides of the screen. And a couple of times I played it I kept getting this error "Audio input: &#(*$# error".
What did I do wrong? Is compressed in to small of size? I used 475mb like suggested on the front page. Should I have made it longer?
Hope someone replies!!!

Choppy video
It's been a while since I converted Family Guy episodes for my AXIM 50v. My recommendation would be to see what the difference between your successful movie compressions were and what the new ones are. My guess is it has something to do with non-compliant pixel aspect ratios, Interlaced or Progressive source and/or output. These are just areas that have been stumbling blocks in the past and would be suspect. Because of long rendering times.... it is always better to do short/test renders first. Once you have your settings down and they work, you can go for the BIG renders with more confidence. This approach can save you both time and frustration.
Note: Until the iPhone comes with an SD card slot... my AXIM will rock on!!! Long Live the Original!!!

Thank you stanb17. I will go back and check the settings. The aspects ratio is one of the steps I took directly from the tutorial. However, i will scan through earlier conversions and see if I made an error or have to make some adjustment. You are absolutle correct, i will start with smaller conversions again to learn the size variation.
I know the suggestion in the tutorial was 475mb for a given size. But that was just a suggestion, I might have to do some over night experimentation.
And as I concur with you,....Long live the Axim!!! :approve:
Thanks again buddy!
