Excellent, I'll change my links. Thanks for the info, as I often to forget to look for updates!

Speaking of subtitles. Here's a question. I encoded Kill Bill Vol 2. I chose English - I think 6channel was the only choice audio wise. Anyway, I kept subtitles OFF. Well, there is about half an hour in the middle of the movie where there are subtitles...but I figured they were just part of the movie. Otherewise, there are no subtitles. Well, after decoding, there are suprise - no subtitles at all! So, should I select subtitles on, and if I do, will it add subtitles all the time? Thanks for the advice.

I would guess yes, beta player does a great job of rendering MPG 4, it played these movies fine on my old Toshiba e740, when Pocket DivX and Pocket MVP stuttered and made the movie unwatchable.

Most likely you want to go with the default option of only showing forced subs. (That way subs only show when the language spoken on screen is not english.)

Audio track problems

Must say, this has all been most helpful. However, running my very first movie (SW2-Attack of the Clones--excuse me) I get the voice-over commentaries of George his very own self et al. Is there any way to get just the original movie soundtrack?

In Auto GK you can select the audio track you want to encode. You must have picked a commentary track. Try selecting one of the 5.1 AC3 tracks and under advanced convert it to a CBR MP3.

I just watched my first video (Band of Brothers, Ep 3 of my collection)on my x5 on the way home from Atlanta... i think i told my wife about it at least 3 or 4 times the same night...Needless to say, I cant wait to get the rest of the series put on my CF card to watch them... Totally makes the flight home an enjoyable one!

i trimmed a 1 hour episode down to 242MB for my 256 CF card...it lagged on me in about 2 spots, but i'm definitely not complaining. i had to stop playback in one place and restart again is all...

Audio Track Solution

Re: SW2 commentary track problems:
In AutoGK (Step 2), the "English AC3 2ch" for SW2 is, in fact, the commentary track. Selecting "English AC3 6ch" solved the problem, giving me the regular movie soundtrack, and not adding much at all to the actual file space used by the audio portion (less than 10MB more, it seems).
I presume other movies may use the "2ch" option for yet other things.

Excellent Tutorial. Thanks!

This is one of the very best examples of a forum tutorial that I have seen. Very simple and easy to follow. I got it right the first time.

This should be a Sticky

i have converted several of my son's 30 minute or so dvds according to the tutorial and they have come out excellent. thanks for the free information :)

i do have a question though as i have a x30h... the ratio mentioned in the tutorial is ~23 minutes to 110MB with a maximum resolution of 640. since my screen is 320 should i then decrease the MB limit as well? i converted a 35 minute dvd with a limit of 167MB and 320 resolution and it looks superb... but is 167MB overkill for a 35 minute movie at 320 resolution? should be cut in half just as the resolution is cut half (from 640 to 320)?
tia,
louie
