Checking "detect 4:3 (global)" doesn't help either. Should I tinker with autocrop, and/or are there other ways to enforce 4:3 before I delve into the good ol' Manual GK?

Yeah go ahead and auto crop that. Try croping 32 pixels off both the top and the bottom. That should work if your video is truly 176W.

1. Is there a way to tell (maybe a rule of thumb) which file is the widescreen and which is the full screen version? trying to rip top gun and there are 2 equal files found (both 1:32). i want to get the full screen - is it typically the first or second for example?
3. does SD or CF matter for any reason (one vs. the other)? now that i know how to do this i want to buy me some media!!!
4. i've downloaded and installed betaplayer 0.5 - do i also install "mpc.setup.STABLE.0.5.exe" (this file is from their "plugin" dload section) to get this x50v chip plug-in or does it just come w/ the stable ver?
THANKS!!! very happy to have finally figured this out thanks to this great tut.

1. When I rip my movies, I put them their own folder and label them either 'MOVIE NAME'- Wide. That solves alot of the problem. But if you still need to know and you are in AGK, push Ctrl+F9 and it will take you into that menu. In the top right corner where we override our video aspect ratio, it should have what the video is already in highlighted.
3. I have seen tests that prove SD over CF in media access. I personally bought 2 1GB SanDisk SD cards. Although now I would buy the SanDisk 2 GB Ultra II SD card. Either way, having all your media on the SD card frees up your CF for either programs, or you can get a CF GPS and not be forced to have a wasted CF card.
4. I'm not sure if it includes it with it or not. If it truly is newer than the latest unstable version then I would say 'yes'.
Thanks for keeping the thread going, I've been insanly busy lately!
